I guess it is because it is safe. You can vent your agressions and come on more explicit than in everyday life, where most of us probably have to restrain ourselves several times along the way. And great that we do, otherwise we would be back in the dark ages.

So, I see Forums like these as a free space where one can get something off one's chest at a low (close to zero) cost. The price is that you'll have to accept being called names every once in a while. But I think, as long as people doesn't take it too seriously, and "as long as it doesn't cause a murder", then it is ok.

And I don't think it is neither a teenagestyle angst nor a guy thing. It's human and completely age- and genderless (if there are such words).

When referring to pronouns, I use the word gender.
When referring to people, I use the word sex. 8)

Seraph: explain this to me:
After reading your post I'm impressed with both your guts and your debating style. Yet I'm minorly baffled.
This forum seems to have lost its glare, leaving little room for discussions and becoming a place for bashing. You've noticed and posted a mighty lengthy, thorough and sensible debate entry, the likes of which the Forum only sees in quoted articles. I estimate it could've taken you at least an hour to type it, do the research on the quotes, check for spell errors etc.

-Why do you waste so much time on somebody like Jimmie D? He's somebody that won't listen to any reason if it doesn't suit his opinion.

-Why do you take the people bashing so earnestly? It's the internet! While this may have been one place of intellectual heaven (or at least it is in the mind of some forum members), it's not now. Let the little boys with their toys, ignore the silly quirks that go behind the blanket of anonymity and leave them alone if you don't like them.

-Don't you have anything better to do?

While we are patiently awaiting Seraph's response to your question, I'd like to pipe in an say that I honestly believe his post is a guy thing that us ladies have a hard time understanding. I wonder what prompts someone to go out of their way to bash a fellow forumer (unless they have been provoked personally)?

After 4 years of being a member on this forum, I have witnessed countless trash talkers and the vast majority (if not all) have been men. In fact, I can only think of one woman who went out of her way to fight like a man and that was Wife. She eventually gave up and left.

I think some people use this Forum to work out their teenage style angst that is all built-up inside. It is obvious you don't have to be 13 to act like a teenager. Sometimes it is entertaining but most of the time I scratch my head wondering why they felt the need to write what they did?

I have to admit I prefer Seraph's fighting style over that of most Forumers, who only know how to play ad hominem. This guy has some arguments, even.
Or maybe it's a girl.

Ahhh... this is why I love the Internet... talking to people and hiding in a corner at the same time.

As someone who's been the target of flaming by both men and women of varying ages on 4 different forums in my 7 years of foruming, I definitely concur 100% with HJ's "human and completely age- and genderless" comment regarding forum bashings.

Like the late great FZ once said - "ladies, you can be an asshole too".

A foolish young man
Of the Negro persuasion
Devoted his life
To become a caucasian
He stopped eating pork
He stopped eating greens
He traded his Dashiki
(uhuru!)
For some Jordache jeans
Got some bleach from the laundry
And he started to pour
Now he says to himself
I ain't no
(nig'nint!)
No more

Go to a doctor and tell them your fingernails are turning that way.

After thinking about it for a few days, I think Cheese Doodle Dust might make a great band name or album/song title.

Any thoughts? Good? Bad? Stupid? The String Cheese Incident people might try to file a lawsuit against me for plagiarism?
