Are there any concerts in particular that are referred to as Frank's best?

Really? There's never been one night that maybe they were a bit off, regardless of being the great musicians they were?

^^^^ Stop turning enthusiasm into yellow snow, Calvin.

Some of my choices, not in any particular order (and why):

1. Osaka, Japan 1976 (Black Napkins solo used on Zoot Allures)
2. Berlin, Germany 2/1978 (many Sheik Yerbouti solos from this concert)
3. Brussels, Belgium 1982 (incredibly twisted FZ solos)
4. Ft. Lauderdale, Florida 1980 (He Used to Cut the Grass w/vocals, a unique robot Easy Meat)
5. Buffalo 1980 (because it was great & I was there!)
6. Chicago 3/3/1988 (after the Swaggart-bashing, Sting came out and did Murder by Numbers with the band)
7. The Ritz, NYC 1981 (incredible show including a killer Stevie's Spanking, a reggae version of Whipping Post, the premier of Clownz on Velvet w/Al Dimeola, and best of all, a cover of Christopher Cross' Run Like the Wind sung by Brian Peters the drum roadie and introduced by FZ as "this is Run Like the Wind featuring Brian Peters and Al Dimeola"!)

I remember reading about one concert where Frank instructed the band to play the whole gig in reggae style
any ideas which gig this was?.. and whether it was recorded?

I still like the KCET gig the best...but I haven't listened to all gigs

I was at the FZ/OZ gig....but the Hordern always sounds crappy
It sounds better on CD

I was merely asking Jayp if he's heard one. He's heard lots more than I have, I've never heard a clinker.

^^^^ Was only jokin' :)

And I have to add:

8. Santa Monica 12/1981 (great FZ solos, esp. SATLTSADW, special guests Nicolas Slonimsky and Lisa Popeil)

There are so many. There are lots of soundboards from the 74 band. There is a great one of the Zappa/Beefheart tour...the last 88 US show...the 4 hour Halloween show from the late 70's...

There are some tapes of poor grade but the band was HOT...check out Jon's list for song content...if you want my advice get them all...

Let the ZFT that all you EVER will buy in the future is ZAPPA music...release the contents of the vault and buy it all!

I am ready!

Actually the whole run of shows from Royal Oak, Muskegon and Chicago from '88 were among the best performances from that tour.

All the shows I saw except the 75 tour with Bianca. I saw almost every band from 73 on, and they were almost all peak musical experiences. :D

For what it's worth, the Kalvøya 1973 show is widely considered to be the best Zappa-concert on Norwegian ground, and one of the best ever concerts in Norway. Did anyone here attend this show?
