Ruth? Roy? Don? Underrated? I'm thinking not. Okay, Roy always thought he was just a "Dumb Mexican" (Silly boy), but he was actually quite a prized member of the group. Frank did ask him back in the mid to late '70's for several incarnations of The Mothers....Watch the two play off one another in BBSNX--they are both having a great time! ....Watch him while he's eating and ask him what he's doing....what's he doing?

HE'S EATING!!!!!!!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Those people are forgetting that he almost got picked to be the drummer for the Jimi Hendrix Experience. That's the way the coin flips, though

Aynsley Dunbar is a WAY better drummer than Mitch Mitchell!
Not that Mitch is bad, but he doesn't stand up to Aynsley.
Some of his playing is quite loose, it's Zappa's specifications that keep him steady. Besides, a lot of Hendrix's live stuff is too sloppy, Hendrix is always on, but his band lags behind, I think with Dunbar would have made everything a lot better!

I'd have to say Aynsley was the most underrated drummer. I agree with you assessment of Adrian, though. I saw a clip of the BBSNX version of "City of Tiny Lites" on the A&E Biography of Zappa, and he just blew me away. [/quote]
my vote for the most underrated (former fz) drummer goes to chester thompson who could play with george duke & the brecker brothers as easilly as he could sit in with genesis/phil collins....not that he was better than the other 4 drummers mentioned here, but i think this indicates that drummers were generally underrated in zappa's bands, maybe overshadowed by other flashier players & not allowed a lot of extended solos, with the exception of bozzio, but he also put in vocals

1. I wouldn't say that Aynsley really blows Mitch away. Mitch is a pretty damn good drummer.
2. Chad was surely closest to Vinnie's style of playing of any FZ drummer. Perhaps partly why he was basically Vinnie's replacement.
3. I wish those Disco Boy and Central Scrutinizer fellas would stop posting childish whining ad hominem dogma based upon their aesthetic impotence in re certain Zappa albums. Why would you blame Mark and Howard for anything? They were a couple of the best FZ band members/employees/singers that the man had over the years. And why do you choose to ignore what makes this stuff great? You guys might need to slow dooown and pay attention to what you think.
4. I forgot whatever I was going to post.

Chad Wackerman is AMAZING !! he is my fav. Zappa drummer - his style lies somewhere between Terry and Vinnie but was not a clone of either - he brought his own personality to the FZ drummer spot- he was just 21 when he first joined FZ and Frank was obviously very happy with him to keep him on for all his subsequent tours ( as well as LSO gig) - he also does incredible work on many Allan Holdsworth albums as well as on a couple of Andy Summers albums .
I think the electronic kit used in 84 was a mistake but I guess it was Frank's idea - it was the thing at the time for a lot of the great drummers ( Bruford , Bozzio , Peart etc..) . but I reckon if Frank was alive & well and touring now his drummer would be Chad .
