The worst bootleg I've heard was the opening number of the ill-fated Palermo concert. Horrible. It was barely music. But the sound quality of bootlegs isn't always bad, it's never excellent but sometimes good.

The Halloween 1978 boot is a four-CD set, the one I'm talking about is a three-CD set. It was probably recorded in 1977 then (in New York City I think).
Or maybe there are two boots of this show Image But I doubt Image

The '77 Halloween show was broadcast on King Biscuit.
It is nearly an hour long, and is a stereo FM A quality boot.
Their are also two Audience boots. One is nearly A- quality. Depends on the generation of tape.

I finally got a copy of this show, the title of this 3-CD set (with a horrible cover!!!) is Zappy Halloween. Actually it originates from October 30th and 31st shows. The sound is, well, so so Image

This is the big one" announces FZ, and boy he wasn't kidding. This is one monumental show, encompassing most of this band's repertoire + some songs never-played-elsewhere. But the reason for loving this show isn't its length (it does have its half-dead spots), it is the Shankar Jams! We get 7 appearances by mr. L, all of which turn out magical.

I got the Halloween boot by trading, like many others much earlier than the official DVD-A came out. These two items are not comparable.
When you go for boots you know you cannot have high expectations regarding the audio quality, but this particular one is definitely listeneable.
It is a wonderful experience and it is the closest you can get to witnessing the event in case you missed it (like myself).
I bought the DVD-A as soon as it came out and I will buy everything the ZFT will decide to publish, but I played it maybe a couple of times, standing the magnificent audio quality and so on, it just doesn't bring me the emotions that the boots from that wonderful NYC run do.
I will never thank enough the guys who taped this and all the other shows, if it wasn't for them I would have missed hundreds of hours of some of the best music ever played.
Thus said, collecting boots doesn't keep me from buying official releases as soon as they come out, indeed it just makes me hungrier for more.
So I don't understand why to be so harsh about concert tapes, as devote fans we should be more than pleased that they exist!

To be serious, if I had to choose, I'd take the bootleg. I'd rather have a full show than a greatest hits. Good music before good sound.
Throw away tracks, are you insane. Have you heard the Packard Goose. Like most of us, I'll but whatever the ZFT releases, but the track choices the Dweez gave us leaves me scratchin my head. Even Frank has joked about how many times he's played Dinah-Mo Humm.

Ok, I just had to dig up this thread because Halloween 78 is fucking awesome!
(77 is really great too, but for me there's no competition.)
Once you've heard the whole show, the DVD-A is really disappointing.
They left out all the good stuff, except Ancient armaments, which is edited, and Napkins/Horsie.
What the hell were they thinking?
You wanna talk throwaway tracks?
Just look at the tracklist on the official release, ever seen those titles before?
Compare that to FZ and Shankar switching solos for 10 minutes on Watermelon, or for 15 minutes on Packard goose. It's pure magic.
This is without a doubt my favorite Zappa show, and I think it's a shame that instead of realeasing 4 hours of incredible, beautiful music they went with 70 minutes of hits we've already paid for several times.

I know, complaining about this release is getting pretty old, I just had to do it one last time, now that I've heard what could have been.
