Variations IV - Pick Me I'm Clean

http://www.thebignote.com/archived/bald ... _vault.php

This month we feature the fourth in our "Variation Variations" series: a forgotten gem of a song from back in 1980, "Pick Me I'm Clean".

You all know this one from Tinseltown Rebellion, but that five minute offering hardly does justice to the rip-roaring versions that Frank produced during the two 1980 tours.

We begin with pre-tour rehearsals in February 1980, with Frank putting the band through its paces. The next 3 tracks, from April and early May, have a laid back feel to them; Ike has yet to feel really comfortable with the vocals and Frankís guitar solos are restrained. The soloing is good of course, but not yet great. By late May Frank begins to speed up the tempo of the song, and things start to happen. Track 5, from Rotterdam, has a beautiful, clean solo.

But it is the Fall tour, and the return of Vinnie to the band, when good becomes great. Track 6, from Detroit, recorded in late November gives us a slower version, plenty of audience noise, and a frankly mind-fucking solo. Rip 'em to shreds Frank.

Track 7, from Chicago two days later, provides another fabulous solo. And then we get to Santa Monica, the final two shows of the tour for tracks 8 (early) & 9 (late). The early show is good, but the late one is unbelievable: for nearly thirteen minutes, Frank pulls out all the stops, including Torture-style moaning behind another glorious solo. This is magnificent - as good as it gets.

After 1980, for reasons known only to himself, FZ decided to shelve this song, only resurrecting it for a few brief appearances towards the end of the 1988 tour; track 10 featured here.

Now, having heard these Variations, you tell me whether youíd rather listen to the Tinseltown version, worthy though it is. I know where I stand.

UMRK 10 February 1980
San Bernardino 5 April 1980
Fort Lauderdale 18 April 1980 early show
Portland 4 May 1980
Rotterdam 24 May 1980
Detroit 26 November 1980 early show
Chicago 28 November 1980 early show
Santa Monica 11 December 1980 early show
Santa Monica 11 December 1980 late show
Graz 29 May 1988
One correction....
Ray is the lead singer of Pick Me, I'm Clean on all the 1980 verisons not Ike.
Anyway....

PMIC is absolutley one of my all time fav FZ songs. Ever!!! In my top 10. The song itslef rules but the solos are just brutal during the Vinnie/Art shows.
Awesome!!!

Thank you.

The Tinseltown version of this song is what I play for drummers that have not heard Vinnie. His playing throughout the song is great, but what he does during the solo interacting with Frank and the rhythm section is not of this earth and was simply the most creative thing I'd ever heard.

VCF

Thank you very much. PMIC is also one of my fave songs. The UMRK clip is illuminating. In fact they all have their own individual qualities that have just transformed me into an even harder hardcore Zappa freak!

How did Jaypunk confuse Ike and Ray? Sounds like he is winging it to me my most learned Zappa trainspotters.
Any way the 1980 band is all about Ray and Ike givin it the large one...TOGETHER!!

I think my favorite versions are during 1980.
With Bob Harris on trumpet...it adds such a great feel.

Jaypfunk: You are the most obnoxious asshole I have ever seen. When someone is new to Zappa, do you expect them to go through jaypfunk training to know not to ever ask any questions jaypfunk can answer?
