Hello Folks,
Another great show, the band gets better every time I see them.
They did Apostrophe in it's entirety, complete with album fades, a nice touch.
(but you probably already knew that.)
What you might not know is, The Bra and Panty Quilt is back (in force !) no
shortage of girls willing to sacrifice their undies for the greater good of creating
a New and Improved quilt. :>)
Dwezzil had them all up on stage dancing to "Keep It Greasy", hilarious,
just great. At one point security wouldn't let them walk up the steps, so he told the
girls to climb up on stage from the front at which point some of the guys in the band
started hauling them up over the front of the stage. (wonder what it cost him in fines?)
Anyway, back to the music.
Some highlights:
Watching & listening to Frank play the solo on "Muffin Man" on a big screen
while the band accompanied him.
(man, I miss Frank, but kudos to Dwez for giving us a chance to see him on stage again)
All the players are wonderful, but I have to say, Scheila Gonzalez just tore it up!
WoW! I'd love to see/hear her and Napoleon go at it. Plus, she's got a funky little shimmy
when she dances. Bonus! :>)
Also, I'm more and more impressed with Ben Thomas's vocals. His range and
attention to detail (of the original sources) is outstanding. Add to that his horn work and
I' ld say Dwez has one powerful secret weapon in Mr. Thomas.
Tunes? You want interesting choices? How about "Baby Snakes" and
"City of Tiny Lights" !!! Thank you Dwez!
Speaking of Dwez, "Where Does He Get Those Wonderful Toys?"
He is an absolute master of sound. It's more than just playing the notes
(hard enough in itself), but he's managed to replicate every sound Frank ever produced
on his guitar, in minutia. You gotta love this kid. Was he playing a Violin on guitar? Yeah, he was.
The best, appropriately, was saved for last. The delicately titled,
"I Promise Not To Cum In Your mouth". In which, in my humble opinion, Dwezzil Zappa
stepped up his game and produced a (yeah I was there that night) masterful performance.
He took me elsewhere.
It was like in years past when I would close my eyes at a Zappa show and let his solos just
wash over me. Well, by the time Dwez was done and I opened my eyes all I could say was
"What just happened?!?" It was truly amazing..................thank you dwez.
Well folks, it's Chilly in Philly, but I'm warmed by the early Christmas present
I received last night at Zappa Plays Zappa (accept NO substitutes, for real !!!).
