This has probably been rubbed in the ground long ago, but any insight as to why FZ never ever toured South or Central America? Language barriers?? No promoters for rock music?? Too fucking dangerous in the 70's??

Maybe Mr. GG can help

Brazil wise, maybe it is a conjunction of factors you mentioned.

Prior to 1985, international rock acts were extremely rare here in Brazil. We used to live in a military dictatorship and I don't think Zappa would be the prototype Rock artist one would invite here then.

But then you probably didn't have willing and competent promoters and, even though there is significant following here now, Zappa is not one of the most popular artists you ever heard about. Most people wouldn't know who he was...

Most likely, it could be a particular reason in his own head. Has he ever played in Mexico, for instance?

thanks for the quick one GG

As far as the FZ gig list, he never played anywhere south of the Rio Grande. There surely was a market problem and as you say the "Political" situation in many countries down there was maybe a little too "uptight" to "Get it".

However, when you think about it, He played Spain many times so the language barrier is not an issue, and the demographics would indicate that there could have been a market in those days.

I'm gonna ask Gail about it.

...just because i've nothing better to do today.

When in doubt, call in the professionals. Thanks Disco. Interesting read, i've met many FZ fans here in France who saw him for the first time in their home town back then. Lot's were not impressed because:
a) the bad to really bad venue.
b) Fz' total lack of contact with the audience. (In Lyon he reportadly played the entire concert with his back to them).
c) Played mostly instrumental music (ie songs noone ever heard before).

The South American reasoning sounds as sound as it gets i guess.
