1970-11-19 Fountain Street Church, Grand Rapids

Image

I saw Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention for the first time in
1970. He played at the Fountain Street Church in Grand Rapids,
Michigan -- a presentation of the church's youth group. It was likely
their last presentation, too. According to a friend of my mother's
who attended the church, the congregation was scandalized when word
got out that Zappa performed a piece called "Penis Dimension." After
the show I snuck backstage and observed bandmember Howard Kaylan
talking to two groupies. Or maybe they were just two starstruck
church girls. I sidled up to Zappa and, quoting a snatch of
conversation on an early Mothers album, I said "My hair's getting
good in back, isn't it?" He chuckled. Four years later I saw the band
again at Michigan State University.

According to a ticket stub I've found, the concert took place at Ancien Hall D'Expositions. I can't find a hall named like that in Luxembourg, but I found a hall in the same quarter (Limpertsberg), wich is called Halle Victor Hugo. So I guess they renamed it, since it doesn't look rebuild after 1984.

Here you'll find another picture of the building. Scroll down and ask yourself whether some cats were god's fourth mistake.

Macon Coliseum, Macon
1973-02-28

The Macon Coliseum is a multi-purpose arena and convention center in Macon, Georgia, United States. It was home to the Macon Whoopee and Macon Trax ice hockey teams and currently is home to the Macon Knights arena football team. Seating 7,182 for hockey and arena football and up to 9,252 for concerts, it is the largest of three facilities comprising the Macon Centreplex, which also includes the adjacent Edgar H. Wilson Convention Centre and the City Auditorium, located downtown.

History
Macon Coliseum was built in 1968 as the first facility of its size and kind in the state. It quickly became Middle Georgia's premier sports, entertainment and trade show venue, with concerts by well-known performers such as Elvis Presley. It underwent major renovations in 1996 including the addition of the Edgar H. Wilson Convention Centre, which hosts conventions, trade shows and banquets. The Convention Centre has 30,800 square feet (2900 m²) of exhibit space, which in addition to the Coliseum's 42,207 square feet (3921 m²) gives a total of 73,007 square feet (6783 m²) of exhibit space for the complex, which also has 26,279 square feet (2441 m²) of meeting space divided into 14 meeting rooms. Three luxury suites were added in 2003 and the Coliseum's exterior redone, resulting in the addition of a giant "M" at the main entrance on the arena's facade.

Sportatorium, Hollywood
1973-03-03

The Hollywood Sportatorium was built in 1969 as a concert venue with 15,500 seats at 16661 W. Hollywood Blvd. (now Pines Boulevard) in western Pembroke Pines, Florida. It was built adjacent to the Miami-Hollywood Motorsports Park, built just four years earlier. It finally opened its doors in September of 1970.In the past, travel was on a small two lane road that was Pines Boulevard in order to arrive there.

The Sportatorium was a shoddy arena made of cement and sheet metal. Even though Air Conditioning was installed in 1976, it did not seem like it. It was originally built in unincorporated Broward County but the land was eventually annexed to Pembroke Pines in 1980. Even though it had cheap construction, it was the place to be. The Hollywood Sportatorium was the site of concerts for all the big names in the music industry. Elvis Presley, Elton John, Queen, U2, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, and every other famous rocker of the 70’s and 80’s played there. Numerous conventions took place at the facility, including a Star Trek convention featuring Gene Roddenberry. Despite all the famous artists playing, it was still notorious for poor acoustics. Billy Joel at one of his concerts, with echoing sound, yelled, “This place sucks!â€￾. The Sportatorium was the place for South Florida good times, memories, and a setting for young ones to do pot in the gravel parking lot remotely located in the Everglades. Ironically, it also served as a place of worship for Jehovah's Witnesses assemblies. Plans to make it a hockey arena never went throught and it finally closed in 1988 due to the loss of business from nearby newly-built Miami Arena. It's final show on October 21, 1988 featured country music groups, Highway 101, Desert Rose, and Larry Boone. Heavy metal fans ,however, protested to the city's closing of the venue but failed to succeed.

In 1993, due to lack of use and the new residential land being sold, the Hollywood Sportatorium was torn down. Now a Sedano’s supermarket along with the community Pembroke Isles at Pines Boulevard and 172 Avenue, occupies what used to be this South Florida famed place.
