A piece of Satie's music was played by the Orchestra of Our Time as part of the opening set of the first night of the 1991 edition of Zappa's Universe.
I believe that it was Joel Thome's idea to include Satie, and but also, I'm pretty sure that if FZ had objected to Satie as part of the program, he would have let Thome know.
The Satie music wasn't played every night - the reception of the audience to non-Zappa music was not that good.
Having not only attended all of the Zappa's Universe performances but also having my appreciation for Satie that was included in the program quoted by Joel Thome in a Keyboard magazine article may I inform you and the NG that you have the generality of Joel opinion of there being some connection of Satie to Zappa and it does appear that this was Joel's energies for including it in the program.
I had several phone conversations with Joel Thome in the months before the concerts but these conversations focused on Zappa compositions. It was on the opening night of Zappa's Universe that all three movements of Socarate was performed: Portrait of Socrates, On the banks of the Ilissus & Death of Socrates.
On all other nights only one movement was performed.
On the second night when Orchestra of Our Time
only performed one of three movements after the performance I stood and cheered no more than 10 feet away from Joel voicing my interest for the rest of the composition to be performed but the program moved along into the Zappa compositions that changed set lists and musical guests on a nightly basis.
For anyone that wants to read of Joel Thome's commentary on not only his commentary on the connection between Zappa and Satie but that one particular Zappa fan also shared this view you can find that commentary in the Keyboard magazine article.
Now Joel may very well have been over dramatizing the connection on what he chose and my applause for the full performance of Sacrate but to be honest my opinion of the connection between Zappa and Satie has more to do with the generalities of a modern composer than with some specific ionization of Thomematics.
