Just curious about all those who recently turned 50. Did any of you do anything special or was it just another day? I hit 50 last year and didn't do a thing about it. I have to admit I find it a bit awesome having reached 50 but it's not really that big a deal.
What I've just recently been seeing that seems just remarkably eye-catching is the term "early seniors" designating those in the "50 to 62 age bracket."
I think I'm going to have to gurgle at the Great Google to find who's using it but it made me do a double-take when I saw it. (I think the first time I saw it it had something to do with another fantastic new life insurance offer.)

I hit 50 last year -- didn't do a thing for it , but on the following Saturday my wife threw a surprise party for me . :D :D

Within a month I went to a funeral for a close friend that was 13 days older than me ....talk about feeling old.

Gotta be honest here .. looking back I sure wasted a lot of time in my life ..here I am in the last quarter of the ' big game ' , and though I've accomplished a few things in my life , I always thought I should have done more ....Damn music n pot ... blame it all on that

40 was a BIG party. 50 was more serene...and I made more resolutions...get in better shape..quit eating chips...lose weight...move to Spain...for some reason NOW I am worried about longevity! Oh, yeah, also went to Italy for my birthday present and cycled through Tuscany. :D

I had a great day on my birthday. but, it wasn't so much because I turned 50, I just had a great day anyway.
didn't do anything special.
I think it's pretty kool to be 50, though. 8)

Happy Birthday, Poly D! It's strange how there's now a cluster of B-Days 'round the Z-Forum and in my own fambly. (But around here I keep asking, "How much is that one gonna cost me? OK, I'll get my checkbook" -- knowing full well *they'll* hate whatever the shit is anyway.)

Wow! I've never checked out this thread before, and now I've found that several people wished me a happy birthday on the 1st. Thanks, guys!

Thanks to everyone for the birthday wishes. I normally don't make a fuss about birthdays but I've noticed how fast time seems to be passing these days and thought that it might be because I don't make enough fuss of special occasions.

Spacebrother, cheers, but I nearly had an embarrassing moment at work assuming this thread might be pretty safe.

Hope you had a good one Poly...Im all too aware of the years passing by as well, and it is rather scary...! That said, the older I get, the more comfortable I am in my own skin. Cheers! 8)

That's because, like clothes, it fits a bit tight when new, but after a while it stretches, wrinkles, and gets roomier!

Gabriel Garcia Marquez turns 80

Celebrations for Colombian writer Gabriel Garcia Marquez's 80th birthday have kicked off with a marathon reading of his most famous novel.

Gabriel Garcia Marquez now lives in Mexico

In Spain, 80 politicians, writers and actors read, in 15-minute turns, One Hundred Years of Solitude.

Celebrations later in Colombia will mark the start of Garcia Marquez year.

There are also plans to rebuild the home in which "Gabo" lived in Aracataca, the town in which he was born on 6 March 1927.

This year also marks the 40th anniversary of the publication of One Hundred Years of Solitude and 25 years since Garcia Marquez was awarded the Nobel Prize.

Magic realism

Launching the celebrations in Spain, Deputy Prime Minister Maria Teresa Fernandez de la Vega read the opening pages of the 1967 novel.

Over some 20 hours, politicians, writers and actors from across the Spanish-speaking world took their turn to read from the book.

"He was born in Colombia, but all of us who speak Spanish have in him a referent of perfection and the creation of beauty," Colombian Ambassador to Spain Noemi Sanin said in Madrid.

Garcia Marquez - who has been writing for the past 60 years - is also known for other novels such as Love in the Time of Cholera and Chronicle of a Death Foretold.

Considered the father of the literary genre known as magic realism, Garcia Marquez has lived in Mexico for the past two decades.

He has not said how he will mark his birthday.
