Hey everyone....we probably all agree that Frank was an
intelligent guy.

He knew he would make more progress addressing the
US political establishment dressed in a suit with short hair,
than he ever would have with long hair in jeans and T-Shirt.

As my late brother once said to me...
'Wearing the right clothes for a job interview increases
your chances of getting the job'.

There will come a time when you won't even be ashamed if you are fat.

I remember reading an interview, (he may not have been serious) but he said he cut it cause he was sick of people asking him about the sixties....probably taken out of context.

from a book I have:
Zappa finally had his hair cut..."It's not fashionable, it's short. I used to wear these little rubber-band things in my hair and when I'd lose them, all my hair would just fall into my face. Finally, I just said, 'Fuck it.' and had Gail cut it." [Zappa: 1979]

I remember the above was quoted from Rolling Stone, it must have been an issue in july/august 1979 - probably with Joni Mitchell on the front. I'm sure it was about Joes Garage. I bought the issue when I was in States.

It could be also in RS!
January 27, 1994
--------------------
When I arrived for the interview, Zappa, 38, had just decided to cancel his proposed tour for the fall, pleading exhaustion. He had just let his wife, Gail, cut his hair short "because I woke up one day and felt like cutting it." After the interview was over and we got into the car so I could be dropped off at Schwab's drug store, Zappa explained the haircut in more detail. "I cut it so people would stop asking me stupid questions about the '60s!" he thundered, punctuating this remark with a slammed door. But as I got out of the car five minutes later, he managed a "Have a nice trip." I guess it was just my imagination that I heard the word "asshole" over the whine of his tires.

:) :) :) Nice quote phydeaux, does anyone know WHEN exactly in 79 Gail whipped her clippers out? Sometime between September and early December would be my guess....

I thought the longer and longer beard and hair were a result of the pain involved in shaving once he was very ill. Think of how disinclined you are when you're very sick and weak -- I know how little I care to touch my face when I've just got a common flu! Even when my dad who insisted on being clean shaven had me shave him for the last month of his life and no matter how careful I was he hated every second of it.
Frank just let his beard grow until it was a very long, bushy thing right up until he died. (He used to refer to himself as, "an ugly guy with a big nose" on many occasions. Well, you could never mistake him for anyone else no matter how he wore his hair, beard and clothes.)
