Anyone know how he took it ? I read somewhere about him being buried with his espresso machine but i can't imagine he drank espressos all day.

Also, was he totally abstemious regarding alchohol or did he have the odd alcoholic drink. Drugs i believe were a total no after he had tried a spliff. Finally, his preferred brand of ciggies was Winston?

He asked for some coffee. I was in a rush to get back to the arena, so I made him some Nescafé. He took one sip ... "Instant coffee, how disgusting. I knew I should have brought my own," he said.
from Knebworth Rock Festivals by Chryssie Lytton Cobold.

I thought he give up Ganga After About 10 times trying it give him sore throut.

I read an interview somewhere that he occasionally sipped whiskey. I watched him at a symposium at the Palace of Fine Arts in SF and I couldn't tell how he was taking his coffee but when he smoked he smoked reeeeally deep! Chain smoker too. He didn't seem to be putting anything in the coffee so perhaps it was espresso?

I would imagine at the least strong black , if not actually espresso. Can't see him as a frothy cappucino or latte man, or even adding milk !! Interesting about the whiskey as I enjoy sipping the stuff myself (in between gulps). He does talk about the difference between tipples in his autobiography with beer swillers seeming to come off worst.

I just posted this because, i'm sure like many, i was surprised when i actually found out that Frank was not like the typical rock star in terms of drugs and booze and as a result became intrigued.

I have been drinking my coffee black for the last 30 years and what I can tell you is this.
Milk or any of these modern flavoring rituals in Coffee is a totally different animal. No No No No.
If I had any way shape or form of having coffee made fro me by someone else
black and only black coffee regardless of the bean type and cooking method.
Once you go black you never go back.

Now while there was a time where I really enjoyed having several Italian Double Expresso's daily
I am also quite happy with a variety of Medium to Dark roasts freshly ground and perked on the stovetop.
I am sorry folks the Joe DiMaggio Mr Coffee drip machine and variants there of that have
taken off since the early 70s just don't do it for me. Joe could run down a fly ball but drip coffee
has far too many inferior residuals. French Press can do a good job if you know what you are doing.
Greek & Turkish Coffee is quite enjoyable but I prefer Italian Expresso.

Unfortunately I never sat down and enjoyed a cup of coffee with Frank but
for the last 30 years black coffee has been a way of life and quite possibly my life experience
could give people who don't drink coffee all that much a little insight.
NO SUGAR EVER.

When Frank played the paladium he had 2 pots of coffee and an industrial restaurant style drip machine onstage front and center where he sat and fiddled with his recording equipment.

Ya I basically have to drink high quality freshly ground beans, estra dark roast, in a french press. Espresso is great as well. When in the presence of inferior coffee, I do add cream and sugar as it is the only way to get the cheap drug down my gullet. Good coffee is always black though. Ideally you roast your own beans and drink that within a few days of the roast, but I haven't gotten that hardcore yet. ON the subject of coffee I recorded a song about if you feel like checking it out,

I Sip Coffee Like A Fine Wine

Also I've read numerous reports of Frank having the odd beer, I remember one person writing about how at one show they came out for an additional encore and he had a beer in his hand, he then said "usually once I open my beer the show is over, but we liked you guys so much..." blablabla. Also we all know the Friday Night Margheritta tradition and such. It is a fact Frank enjoyed the odd drunk, but did not like to get drunk past his blackout days of youth.

I saw Frank sipping a black liquid from a styrofoam cup once, before a show in Dekalb, IL.

I also recall an interview I heard once where he mentioned he liked drinking wine with food but couldn't imagine "just sitting around drinking wine for no reason" or something like that.

Yours truly,
Madcow (who is drinking a Blue Moon Winter Ale as he types this)

I seriously doubt it though I imagine the casual observer thought he must be tripping in the early days. It goes against everything I've ever read or heard about him. I believe he had the kind of mind where he saw the dark, negative, and stupid side of drug culture very clearly. It is kind of a contradiction though that he denounced drug use but was seemingy around alot of users in the early days of the Mothers. I suppose there was really no escaping it back then.

From what I know, a little beer, a little wine, lots of coffee and cigarettes. I do recall an old interview with Mark or Howard (maybe both) where they said they (meaning the band and Frank) used to do some hellacious partying back in those days (the Flo & Eddie/Mudshark era).

I think Frank was a little closed minded on the subject of drugs. Of course, to each their own, but geez..

I'm not obsessive about brands etc You run the risk of going cold turkey if you can't get what you want. But you can usually get what you need!

I draw the line at Nescafe and Maxwell House though.

Big ups on the Chai tea. I suggest making your own, refining what equation of spices works best for you. FUNFUNFUN!

I invested in a Gaggia espresso machine a couple of years ago and my personal preference is espresso using Illy coffee (most other brands don't work with the machine!). For something a little longer lasting - americano (black), but at other times a nice cup of 'ordinary' tea (yorkshire teabags) is hard to beat.

I was in World Market with my girlfriend a few weeks ago and wound up looking at French presses. I've never had my coffee that way before, but I'm thinking about giving it a try. Anyone tried it?

Yes madcow, I am ALL about it! Best coffee period. (I am willing to accept dissention on the espresso however!) So cheap and easy! Here's the trick, you need good beans, bare minimum you grind them yourself just before you brew them. You want a coarse grind, don't mash em too much or you wind up drinking sludge. Now here is the trick, pour in the boiling water, and wait FOUR MINUTES. No more, or the bitterness of the bean starts to take over the flavour, no less, or you are just drinking black water. You have to be extremely precise on the four minute rule. Also, I highly recommend buying a steel press, the glass ones break all the time. Good luck and enjoy!
