"A curious breeze, a garlic breath
which sounded like a snore, cause the doily
fringe to walk and tremble in the gloom."FZ

What was Frank getting at here? A Dog fart? LOL!

Is this the same sort of thing beefheart was getting at in
The Old Fart at Play,...... "Open t' the room uh smell u' coal mixed with bologna, rubber bands, crumpled wax paper bonnets, fat goose legs n' special jellies, ignited by the warmth of the room. The old fart smelled this thru his important breather holes cleverly he dialed from within from the outside we observed that the nose of the wooden mask, where the holes had just been uh moment ago was now smooth amazingly blended camouflaged in with the very intricate rainbow trout replica. The old fart inside was now breathing freely from his perfume bottle atomizer air bulb invention. His excited eyes from within the dark interior glaze, watered in appreciation of his thoughtful preparation." (Beefheart)

Anyone interested in analyzing and discussing in depth Zappa and Beefheart Lyrics?

Well, let's get it right:

Somewhere near the Steinway, or even from within.

Had caused the doily fringe to waft and tremble in the gloom."

Now, discuss.

great imagery.
Very Gothic...
the whole piece is brilliant.

More linear than the Captains' stuff.

But what's there to talk about?

I think Evelyn, The Modified Dog is a pretty lame attempt by Zappa to emulate a Man With the Showing Scalp Flat Top or Golden Birdies type Beefheart composition.

I don't think Evelyn is lame. I like it quite alot. FZ and CB probably influenced each other to a certain extent during their early years and they were both influenced by some of the same things. I'm sure they were both aware of some of the beat poets which may have influenced both of them a bit.
