That's a good clear and concise review of the book in my opinion, TIB.
I just finished it myself (I'm currently in the South of France) and found that it gave me a real insight - i couldn't put it down.

It is best to get your copy from Book Despository. Check their link embedded in 'Woof's post earlier on this here topic, or go to the afka.net website as afka has set up a one stop shop for information regarding Pauline Butchers book. I got my copy in 4 days, including a weekend.

I just bought a kindle, and happened to look up Frank Zappa today, lots of biographies, I choose to read just a sample, and liked the one I read. I felt a lot more sympathy for him. He was an asthmatic, he was the biggest in his Jr. Hi class, he loved art, music creativity, rebellion, making socially meaningful statements. He was all about style, lifestyle, cultural styles, he loved simplicity, and intricacy in music. We cannot gaze at the sun for too long, without hurting our eyes, so, on to something else.

Incidentally, the book sample I read this morning about FZ was Electric Don Quixote, I say it was very good. I like the biographers point of view, objective, but compassionate, with lots of explanations.

Pauline has appeared on the BBC Today Programme (BBC Radio 4) NO mention of the book, but wanted to know about FZ and Pauline's take on the man with the Charles I ringlets.

Hear here:

or google: Zappa 'a humane and unusual man'

Whereabouts were you noisy? I know you had great sunny weather. Did you get to test the grape juice? They make the good stuff down there.

Do you have 10 kids to feed? A house payment that's 5 months behind? No job?

Me either, but man we're poor right now.

Just started reading it a couple of days ago, can't put it down! So far one the best books on Zappa out there. Fascinating stuff.

I do hope GZ writes her side, as long as its not in that condescending cryptic writing style she likes to use. Pauline's writing style is quite beautiful.

For those in USA and Canada you can contact Book Depository thru Abe Books. Books are cheaper when ordered from UK (or even India) than they are from the US (at least in Canada). You can also compare prices and shipping rates with a whole gang of other book sellers. And they show you the shipping rates up front on Abe, so you don't have to put in a fake order to see how much they charge. Some books ship for free, but mind the prices, they may be higher. And for books that have been in print for a while, you can find many used bargains. Forget Amazon - I always go to Abebooks first!

Ordered! A little more expensive than amazon, but I get free shipping. I am looking forward to reading another viewpoint on FZ. Should be a more thought-provoking book than Nigey Lennon's. Not that I did not enjoy Lennon's book.
