All right, utterly crap but still somehow amazing "Live and Let Die" - Wings.
I've always wanted to hear Mike Keneally's version. Apparently he used to be Wall of Voodoo's opening act, playing this on their last tour. The audience reaction was rather like Zappa's reason for signing Alice Cooper. A gig I've always wished I'd seen...

Hmmm. Didn't know that about Keneally. Yeah, that would be interesting. I think "Live and Let Die" is really good as long as Axl Rose isn't singing it. I like McCartney. He seems to have been slammed mercilessly by critics since he left the Beatles because he was more of the craftsman and less the artist than Lennon. I think McCartney had a much better solo career than Lennon in the '70's even though John definitely had some high points as well.

I have come to that conclusion as well. Back in the '70s you sorta had to take sides, and I was a Lennon fan. But LPs like Ram, Venus and Mars and Band on the Run were full of great melodies and Paul could rock when he wanted to. I saw the Wings Over America tour in 1976 and it was one of the best and most well-executed shows off any I saw in that decade.

Except for "Walls and Bridges", I found most of Lennon's post-Beatle output to consist of slow-tempo numbers about himself. The nadir was "Double Fantasy", where not only did he write some extremely weak songs but you had to sit through Yoko every second tack. Plus the content was "Home, family, love" exactly the kind of tweeness he had condemned Paul for when he made "McCartney". That said, the last really varied album by an ex-Beatle was "Ram" IMO. Paulie is still good for one vaguely good track per album, though you have to sit through a lot of dross until he gets to it and he looks like Angela Lansbury these days.

None of us look as good as we did in 1972

I also saw the Wings over America tour in '76, openning night riser row 7 stage right, first time Paul had played LA since the Beatles played Hollywood Bowl. This was definetitly an event as much as a concert, Ringo sat below us in the first row of the same riser and Elton John and Cher not far away. The playing was flawless and it got were when Paul would climb the staircase to the piano you got chills because you new he was goig to belt out a classic like "Baby I'm Amazed". The crowd was amped the musicians were amped, it was definitly in the top 5 (and a strong contender for #1) electricty in the air nights. BTW Denny Lang (I believe that was the guitarist name) was great, perfect fit for that situation.

P.S. For what it's worth there was rumor at the time that both John and George also showed up in disguise and that that was the last time all four beatles were in the same room together...

Denny Laine. Was in the Moody Blues. I think he sang "Go Now."

I'm not knocking anyone's taste as far as music goes, but some of these really don't fulfil any of the original criteria, particularly (paraphrasing a bit) the notion of great musicianship or outstanding vocals. Generally just a bunch of wilfully obscure tunes from a bunch of bands that would in no way come under the heading of 'rock'

It is a bit pointless to say this if you do not give examples. :smurf:

As for Cheap Trick, "Dream Police" comes a distant second to "Surrender". Great group.
