Is this where I post a picture of my crossed eyes?

Seriously, would love to help, but I can't see those. Was never able to. If there's one thing I want back, it's the hours I spent trying to see them.

You won't need me telling you this, but you have to cross your eyes to the extent that the two images become three in a line, and then concentrate on the middle one.

It's actually the opposite of crossing. You are crossing your eyes to focus on the plane of the page. You have to look beyond the plane of the page, relaxing and uncrossing your eyes. The left eye image moves to the right, the right eye image moves to the left and they overlap in the middle producing a stereo effect.

This type is fun, too.
I have a couple of books of just this type.
For me, they stretch way out of the page, but Sabbs just can't see it.

That can work for the type of stereogram JPD posted as there are mutiple cross over points, but its much more difficult to do than crossing eyes.
And it doesn't work for the type I posted at all.

It does kind of work for the ones you posted, in the sense that you can get a single image in focus but it's kind of MC Eschered. So I took one you posted and swapped the images and that does work with the relaxed eyes method.

That's how those stereogram viewers work. They're easy to use because by looking into the viewer the left and right views are easily separated into each eye so you're kind of forced to relax by the viewer. Just looking at them on a page or a screen like in this case takes a little more effort.

The point is that when you use the look into the distance method, your eyes are relaxed and can sustain viewing for much longer without stress and the picture appears much larger. When you use the crossed eyes method it strains your eyes and the picture appears smaller.

The house we used to live in, in Sydney, had repeated patterns in the ceilings, and I was able to do it with them, but only using the crossed eyes method. The ceilings were too high to use the relaxed eyes method because my eyes were already almost relaxed looking at them normally. With the crossed eyes method it made the ceiling look like it was almost twice the distance away - freaky.
