The apparent reason for subduing new material performed live at this point in time was because bootleggers were selling these recordings before they were officially released (or if at all) by FZ.
Huh? How is this the "apparent reason"? I've never heard Zappa utter a word to this affect.

FZ had publicly sworn off touring after the 1982 tour, and had made similar threats prior to that. His activities post-1982 tour mark a transitional period where he, in his own words, went to dwell in the "serious music" world for a few years. He was clearly not focused on the ongoing organic process of developing material for "the next rock tour".

He lamented the sniping of his new material by bootleggers, and actively sought prosecution of found bootleggers... and of course there's 'Beat The Boots'. But subverting his own repertoire to combat or foil bootlegging? This hardly fits his profile.

Well, Frank might have said that, but I don't believe that is the true reason why '84 and '88 featured less new material. He must have known that people who bought FZ bootlegs would've also snapped up any new legitimate Zappa album..

"You don't know my fans. Not that they'll buy any crap that I put out there - but they just love hearing a different version of things [...] That's how my fans are." -- from the Lost Episodes booklet

Of course, it must have pissed him off that any new material he played live would have been available on a bootleg before he could release it officially, but I think the real reason is that he wasn't as interested in composing new songs for a rock band as in the 70's or 60's. Like enzothebaker pointed out: at this point in time, he probably was more interested in writing music for classical ensembles or the Synclavier.

i feel a dopplegangerhardon coming on.

i was about to rip into josh yet again but i just had to look up his "Electric Don Quixote" reference and for once is appears that he may have a leg to stand on. our little statistician. i'm so proud of you.

despite the single quote you reference, your other victims make expressed some valid opinions about the evolution of FZ's creative process. i believe that the thinning out of new material was less of a deliberate manifesto in action and more of a natural evolution. like the day that Sheryl Crow put on make-up.

were later tours "hampered" by the lack of new material? well there WAS new material. perhaps Frank's slide rule was broken when he was working up the percentages, but i suspect he had simply lost the flavor for composing "funny rock songs" for yet another decade.

at a right angle to his 1987 comments, he seemed pretty pleased to present the "Broadway The Hard Way" album, which features mostly new material and heavily reworked and mostly previously unreleased older material.

FZ often made ridiculously extreme gestures to satisfy his personal beliefs or desires, such as quiting the guitar because in his opinion it had become more of a video prop than a compositional tool. (don't quote me on that. i will publish my statistics shortly) i can imagine that with the landslide of bootleg releases in the early 80's that FZ likely felt that his creative control had been been irretrievably violated, so why rail against the wind?

in a lot of ways FZ's age of innocence ended in the early 80's, and it colored much of his commentary from then on.
