I do remember John Fogerty getting sued for 'plagarising' himself. He wasn't even allowed to perform Creedence songs in concert until the whole mess was straightened out, even though he wrote, arranged, and produced them himself.

Led Zeppelin also got sued by Willie Dixon. It seems Robert Plant 'borrowed' some of the old blues guys' expressions from their old tunes, but Page's riffs were his own.

Everyone knows The Beach Boys' 'Surfin' USA' is the same tune as Chuck Berry's 'Sweet Little Sixteen'. They had to give him a songwriting credit (and royalties that go with it) to keep him from suing.

The strangest case I can recall is with Rod Stewart's hit song 'Forever Young'. I think he gave Bob Dylan a co-writing credit because Dylan has a song by the same name, but as far as I can tell, that is where the similarities end. They are 2 seperate songs with 2 seperate melodies.

Rod's song 'Tonight's The Night' has the same melody as The Dead's 'Sugaree', but I don't recall any lawsuit about that.

No one decends 4 chords and the other got about 7 chords descending and ascending with loads of variation.

The riff from Van Halen's "Best of Both Worlds" always reminded me of "Celebration" by Kool and the Gang. Wonder if the topic ever came up when they toured together a couple of years ago?
