I always really liked the album 'album' which Vai plays on.
Anyone know a bit more about Vai's contributions?

Johnny Rotten was on the elliptical at a California health club when Vai walked in with his guitar strapped on, tripping into a rowing machine and letting out a mixture of a clang/squeal through his amp on wheels. Rotten proclaimed "You're just the fella I'm looking for to play on my next recording with PIL, which I don't have a name for yet!"

I really like that album too. Bill Laswell was the producer. Vai played all the guitar solos on two separate off days from his duties with Alcatrazz. Ginger Baker and Tony Williams were the drummers and there were some other heavy cats on there as well. John Lydon was reportedly very pleased with Vai's contributions.

This is one of my favourite albums of the Eighties. Vai's shredding on PIL Album is one of his best efforts I think - the music fits his style.

theres a thread called 'EVO Experience' over on the Zappa Concerts section. It's from about 18 months ago. I chatted to Vai about the PiL thing. Check it out

Yes, this 'Album' is on my to-buy list. I couldn't understand why Lydon was saluting Baker in the documentary (about Baker) and then I realised he played on this album...... Not 2 people that you would normally associate with eachother

Laswell had a way of doing that. Bringing disparate talents together to do some interesting things.

It was cool meeting him.
He really is very gracious and humble.

A great bloke.
