Here's a few of my faves:
Steve Harris- Iron Maiden
Cliff Burton- Metallica
Mike Watt- Firehose
Geddy Lee- Rush
Those are just off the top o' my head. In my opinion, perhaps the "best ever" is Andy West of the Dixie Dregs.
Image

And here is a picture of my beloved Kramer Bass:
Image
Steve Harris is great, and he works so well with Nicko McBrain, it's unbelievable.

Here's another one that I just thought of, Matt Freeman of Rancid. Who here plays bass? I do, I have a Peavey C4 bass and a Torque amp, I forget the model but it's a stack type thing, 200 watt head and a 4 x 10 cab.

Victor Lamonte Wooten from Bela Fleck and the Flecktones and his solo stuff. Put Jaco, Stanley, and Larry Graham in a blender . . .

My fav FZ bassist is Arthur Barrow, but Patrick and Tom are right up there.

I, too, love Andy West. He plays/played in a newer band called the Mistakes w/FZ alum Mike Keneally. Their album is available on www.keneally.com, but I've not got it . . . YET. I saw the Dregs in a bar in Tulsa, OK way back when . . . unbelievable. "What If" is one of the best complete albums of all time; there's not a stinker in the lot.

VCF

Poncho, I've got to agree about Matt Freeman - he's an incredible bassist. I'll also endorse nominations for Steve Harris - another legend, and his signature claret & blue Fender bass is a thing of beauty. Scott Thunes is my favorite Zappa bassist, closely followed by 'Tink'.

Hi to all: Great question, you can get a lot of different answers depending on the genre of music, certainly jazz can supply a number of guys that are 'sterling' on stand-up bass.
I think that for 'electrified' that a player named Prakish John, from a Vancouver (Canada) based group called "The Lincolns" circa 1982-85, was a master. More info on the "Guestbook" page where I gave record company and tracks to check out. ;D

:o Sorry about the spelling first time.. Indeed it is Prakash John;
Took a moment to get more info on him: early gigs included stints with Lou Reed, Funkadelic, Alice Cooper, Bush...
Take One was released in 1983 by Attic Records; CAT # 1167;
band lineup: Prakash (bass), Danny Weis (guitar..he played with Iron Butterfly at one point), Michael Fonfara (keyboards), Jorn Andersen (drums), and Steve Ambrose (vocals). ::)
