One thing I know, I can't stand Reggae, but when it's played by Zappa, there's nothing better ! My favorites are: Treatcherous Cretins, Sy Borg, the big-band-to-reggae transition in Hot Plate Heaven At The Green Hotel.

I'm probobly gonna piss a lot of people off but in my opinion I dont particularly like it when Frank plays reggae...but then again i am a bit of purist when it comes to this style of music...sorry!!!

The original (9 years ago!) question is something I've been thinking about lately. I read in the Mojo Zappa Special magazine his take on it described as 'White Mans Reggae' (?). I think there's a similarity between what he was doing reggae wise in the late 70's and early 80's with the Lovers Rock sub genre about at the time - especially the UK stuff.

one more time for the world:
Quote:
mg: what about reggae?
fz: I don't have a collection of reggae music. I like to play it more than I like to listen to it. reggae is a ventilated rhythm. if you're going to play a solo with a lot of notes in it and your rhythm accompaniment has a lot of notes in it, then it neutralizes it. I find it more intriguing to play to a reggae background with jagged pulses and big holes in it - there's blank space, whereas the least comfortable thing for me to play to would he something like a fast james brown band. I wouldn't know what the fuck to do with that.
