Zappa certainly did not hate the book. In fact, he wanted Watson to go on a lecture tour with it. I think it's the only book on FZ, not written by FZ himself, that he approved of.
Sheesh. I missed this message the first time I scanned this thread and then each time I came back only read the latest messages. I've just rescanned the thread trying to decide whether to buy it or not and opinions are really difficult to summarise, but having discovered this little note that the man himself thinks I should read it, book shop here we come. Thanks Hungry Freak, please don't starve.

it's really depressing how maccarthism won over the years
and everytime the words "left wing" are sayed
people think of stalinism
without knowledge where the left wing idea came from
in the times of feudalism to be "capitalist" was a left wing position
in the same way
the word dialectic mostta be checked up
same with the words socialism and comunism
nothing to do with the bourocratic technocratism there was in ussr
it's also pretty depressing to see how people react
to intellectuals just because they doesn't
understand what's been writen
they want it all in the way the "readers indigest" bad quality magasinne
would say it, just the same as an "e entertaiment" show would do it.
I think it was interesting to read. But as many people aleady stated: a bit too dense and pretencious.
And one thing I like to ad: as I recall BW seemed really eager to find some evidence for FZ's homo-erotic excursions. A bit too far fetched, I would say..

I signed this out of a library one time and I also just couldn't get into it. I kept getting an 'overeducated shithead' vibe from Ben's writing. There was also a serious dose of opinion as fact-itis. I much prefer Kevin Courrier's Dangerous Kitchen: The Subversive World of Frank Zappa which is my second favorite Zappa book after TRFZB.
