Due to the speed of light, what we're seeing, in fact what the light brings to our eyesight, is a tiny little bit late. I see a face, in reality the light brings me the image of a face. Since the light takes a certain amount of time to reach my eye, I see something out of the past.

Therefore, technically, the present doesn't exist ! 8)

[sub]A fascinating thought I read in a science magazine... [/sub]

I wrote a short story about time travel 25 years ago called Tobacco Flowers. My main thesis in that story was that hypothetically if time travel is possible then one day in the future a means of time travel will be invented. If that does happen then someone could then visit this time where we are right now. But that would mean that somehow that future time could exist in parallel with this time in order to make the journey possible. Therefore, in a sense, if a time machine could be invented then it has already been invented. But, wait a minute, there appears to be no record during our entire history of anyone ever visiting from the future, so maybe time travel never will be invented because it is actually impossible. The main character, unable to face this realisation then concocts the following: Maybe it is possible and things are so fucked up now and so cool at that future point when time travel is eventually invented, that why would they bother coming back?

The above argument against the possibility of time travel is a purely logical argument somewhat like how the Ancient Greeks used to construct their philosophy but I also have other theses that are based on my limited understanding of physics and conservation of energy.

Anyway, even though I don't believe time travel is possible I have to agree it's a great mechanism for the production of fiction. I will always be and always have been a Doctor Who fan. And I love that Terry Gilliam film, Twelve Monkeys, totally brilliant.

We humans just haven't grown into our brains fully yet. Give it another 1000 years.

timetravel is a mental reality-not physical. In other words, one may go forward or back in time by means of mental or spiritual discipline...that is my theory anyway.

Or perhaps, given some theories kicking around about time, you said them both at the same time. Or perhaps, as you indicate, this is a display of mental or spiritual discipline.

This relates to what I meant about the rôle of conservation of energy. Not only does all the stuff you indicate have to happen but it has to exist for all moments throughout all time to maintain them simultaneously so you can visit any one of them arbitrarily.

On a smaller scale, what about going back in time and bringing petrol with you on the return journey that had at that time not yet been used and then using it again in the present even though in between these two times it's already been used.

Every point of space & time, time & space...is'linked' to every other point thereof...Mental time-&-or-space travel is possible in order to review, but not to interfer. For example-there are many 'lost' jams that exist from the bop era, played in various clubs in Harlem in New York City during the late 1940's.By means of acute powers of imagination or time-remote-viewing,one may 'hear' what transpired therein. There exists a record of every thing said or done.It is a particular property or quality of creation that science has not discovered yet...This is why some psychics may go to a scene of a crime & zone in on what happened.
