What did Zappa study, I mean if Zappa studied piano, harmony, guitar battery,sax,etc and what he penetrate more.

That is one of the greatest books in music ever written. Another one is 'New Musical Resources' by Henry Cowell. (In it is written the begginings of Conlon Nancarrow, Harry Partch, and other modernists. It is amazing.)

The Slonimsky book has not left my backpack since I got it, about 3 months ago.

Particularly, on what Zappa studied..he took Drum lessons from an Irish man (I forgot the name exactly, but for some reason his race sticks out!?!), and a Harmony class his school arranged for him (he studied out of Walter Piston's 'Harmony' tome.)

Other than that, he was completley self taught. Though that's arguable to a certain point- even though he didn't have a formal teacher, his orchestra teacher (who let him conduct the school orchestra) probably let slip a few things.

Another awsome book, for the microtonalists, is Monophony: Genesis of a Music by Harry Partch, plus Chord Chemistry by Ted Greene, and for the kids who cant read music, Books by Joe Charupakorn.

I don't know a great deal about FZ's music theory myself, but I do recall FZ saying that he studied his text books on 12 tone music (or similar) so that he understood WHY he didn't like it!

Zappa, it seems to me, was born with a natural talent for composing music.

He seems to have spent much of his time studying 'people' and their behaviour, documenting his findings in recorded music.

I found some cool stuff about 7 note chords that Zappa was studying when he was doing his synclavier work. Night School uses 7-note chords.

"If you take a C major scale, it sounds like this. You have a certain number of mathematical possibilities of how you space those things out to get a chord. This chord is made up of all the notes in that scale: [plays chord]. That's spread out over an octave and a fifth. See, it's spelled E-F-A-C-D-G-B."

Crazy, huh? AND THIS...

"The other thing I worked out is chords built in fifths. You build chords in fifths plus one third, and that will also give you seven notes. Here's an example of that [plays scale]. That's C-E-B-F#-G-D-A. That's a third on the bottom, and all the other intervals are fifths except one half-step. It's a third, then a triad in fifths, then another triad in fifths up a half-step."

ok, so having heard nothing but good things, i went ahead and baught this book.

seams as it's aimed for the people who are a little more educated than i am.

Can anyone help me with my understanding of the book?
