Whenever some boyband scores a new hit with a remake of some 70s ballad I recall something I read Frank saying shortly before his death, that struck me as almost uncanningly prophetic.<br><br>He said something like - In the future no one, will compose original music but merely re-record old hits, beacuse the best music was already written, and people would just make variations of the same tunes.<br><br>Can anyone remember reading something like this and maybe point me to the source?<br><br>- Madsen<br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br>

Option Magazine JAN-FEB 1987<br>WINTER IN AMERICA: IT'S 1987 DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOUR CULTURE IS?<br>The Frank Zappa Interview Part I by Steve Lyons & Batya Friedman<br><br>
Quote:
[tt]How about the role of music in society outside the pop music industry?  For example, Kent Nagano (conductor of the Berkeley symphony) said in a recent interview that "a composer has a job to do<br>within a culture.  Which is not to say a composer should write what the public already wants to hear, but rather that the public is employing the composer to lead them, to show them a direction." What do you think of that?<br><br>FZ:I don't think a composer has any function in society at all, especially in an industrial society, unless it is writing music scores, advertising jingles, or stuff that is consumed by industry.  I respect Kent, however I think he takes a very optimistic and naive attitude toward what it takes to be a composer.  If you walk down the street and ask anybody if a composer is of any use to society, what kind of answer do you think you would get?  I mean, nobody gives a shit.  If you decide to become a composer, you seriously run the risk of becoming less than a human being.  Who the fuck needs you?<br><br>A songwriter is different. [in a facetious sing-song voice] You write a nice song, then you're important.  Because with a song, now we have a car, now we have love, now we have a this ...  but a composer? What the fuck do they do?[/tt]  All the good music's already been written by people with wigs and stuff on.

Now in 2006 and maybe for some time now,.. Mixing is in! Hip Hop and Rap that uses mixing, and scratching, and computers, to add and mix bits of already recorded sounds to create something "new"
hhmm?
The only instrument being played is the mixer.

well, it's the same with movies; no one in hollywood has the balls to be creative (with a few exceptions), so they do remakes of excellent and even cheesy flicks, as well as tv shows!!!! used to be a time when movie stars would'nt go near tv, now hollywood wants to do a film of dallas. why? to paraphrase:"no balls, felix."

Totally agree dovey, in fact that is a pet hate of mine at the moment. Too many good classics are being totally slaughtered by modern day half wits who can't manage to write their own scripts. I mean, how fuckin dare anyone attempt to remake a classic like The Pink Panther!! Christ on a bike!!! Now theyre releasing a remake of The Wicker Man with Nicholas Cage!! They have to stop. Total lack of creativity.
Also, I am sick of seeing TV remakes released as films, it's just an easy way to make a quick buck. I just refuse to go see these types of film.
As for music, don't get me started. Im bored with Girl and Boy bands releasing rehashed versions of old songs. It sucks arse! At least when Cash did it, he did it with damn style and has a huge back catalogue of his own! You get manufactured shite bands like "Westlife" created by that twat Louis Walsh of "X-Factor" fame on TV, making it big releasing other peoples material. So very wrong in so many ways. Fucking sad thing is, so many people rush out and buy it.
The latest craze is that nob that was on Big Brother recently over here, Spiral his name was. He rapped a bit in the house (very very badly, although in general I regard rap as a bore anyway), and now he has just released a single!! I mean come on!?! There are unsigned bands who slog their guts out to get just a sniff of the big time, playing the music they love and some turd like that comes along and gets it just like that, purely because the record companies see him as a quick money maker for them.
Anyway, rant over with, sorry. If theres one thing guaranteed to get a rise from me it's the above. 8)

I also agree about the movies and the whole "entertainment" industry. Everything is extremely over commercialized.
To quote Frank, "In Tinsel Town the people down there think that substance is a bore."

Hahaha you never heard that one before then JP? Good aint it? 8) It's an expression of madness I use rather a lot, much to my Mums dismay (she's a Jehovas Witness haha). I did say to her that it could be worse, I could be shouting "cunting hell" and she'd hate that more!

Frank did this very often himself with live tracks and such. I'm not disgreeing with you, I feel that sampling is way out of hand, but be careful before you dismiss the studio as a non-instrument, people said the same thing about the electric guitar and even when Beethoven started using Trombones, they said it was obscene and not a "real instrument"

I'll say it again.....CHRIST ON A BMX BIKE! The only bonus would be if Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes have the lead roles and some strange poltergoost gets them.

Yes, but Christ on a crutch is so much better. I think its the alliteration. Just try it!
