Which way is the dancer spinning… clockwise or counter-clockwise?

She mostly spins clockwise but periodically changes to anti-clockwise.

that's the way I see it too. but, maybe that's a trick of the eye, from staring at her for too long?

I see her going anti-clockwise. Can't, for the life of me, get her going clockwise.

And I swear I could only see her counter clockwise, then I concentrated on her foot, and now I can only see clockwise. :?

It's not a trick of the eye, I haven't seen this one before but there's another one on the internet somewhere where you can also tell whether your in left brain mode or right brain mode and that site talks about how we change modes.

Last time I looked at the dancer pic TCS posted I tried doing some mathematical calculations in my head and I kept it going anti clockwise until a huge fly buzzed past my head and it jumped back to clock wise. I can make it change back and forth by changing the focus of my thoughts. So, going clockwise for a long time when I first saw it may have something to do with how I was puzzling over what it was and how it worked - maybe because it looks like the woman might be naked.

So Poly, is it true that the toiled water flushes the other way round, here down south hemisphere?

Thank you so much for that Fido3. I'm going to go pull out my old Danny Elfman records.

Yeah, well, maybe I'm a freak and my brain is the wrong way around. As far as the flush goes though that's just a fact of the conservation of rotational momentum.

My friends say I like to test them with stupid questions... But yes, Poly, you are right, Sr:

Quote:
Corrections to common misconceptions about the Coriolis effect

* The Coriolis effect does not have a significant impact on the swirl of the flushing water of a toilet. Indeed, the direction of the swirl is mainly defined by the direction with which the water is introduced in the toilet, which has a much higher impact than the Coriolis effect

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coriolis_effect

There used to be a wikipedia page with a list of scientific misconceptions/myths such as this one, which features in a Simpson episode where Bart makes a collect call(?) to a country boy in OZ and asks him to check which direction the water is turning on his toilet...

Now back to the program...

The effect itself is not a myth. If you pull the plug in a bath without disturbing the water too much the swirl down the drain goes in opposite directions from one hemisphere to the other. Bart just asked him the wrong question.

The way I understand it, the effect is only applicable in large scales, such as the wind and water streams on the oceans, or a long range missile fired from one continent to another, such as in the animated gif above the prism in my last post, so it would not be visible on a tub even if undisturbed and what would determine the drain votex would be the "topological noise"...
