Frank came out with a real breakout winner in '66 with this cut. Then reworked it in '74 for the Roxy performances, and reworked the hell out of it. Big band arrangements, catchy drum breaks, extra vocal effects etc.

Both versions are great, but only Frank can do a rework to where the song is almost unrecognisable to where it's a different song altogether. My preference would have to go with the Roxy version, but only by a hair. It's much more complex with more lengthy solos. I know most people generally go with the original versions, and I'm one of of them. But this is a rare exception for me.

What's your preference?

To me, there's no contest here. Roxy is more forceful, bluesy, with a good solo. Freak Out is fine, but it sounds to me unformed compare the the Roxy version.
