I love the mono mix of The Idiot Bastard Son that Zappa put together for the release of Mothermania.
The opening is a brief call and answer between a timpani and a (?). What is that other instrument?

It's a piano played very percussively. A combination of a very low key and some relatively high ones. Something like the F two octaves below F below middle C, plus the open fifth of C and G one octave above middle C. There may be some doubling with a percussion instrument, but you can get a piano to sound like that.

Play the c below middle c at the same time as f below that c nice and bassy left hand,right hand above middle c and the next c play fgb 4 times finish of with fgbc.
