I love Ship Ahoy, but is it tone or effects? I dig the sound of it, but I'm not so sure I'm hearing what the guitar sounds like underneath the effect. Either way, I love it.

I really like Frank's guitar sound on the Shut Up... CD's.
The non-album versions of Black Napkins,Watermelon, and Zoot Allures on FZPlaysFZ are favorites of mine also.

I do like the late 80's tone, but it doesn't have the 'balls' of the Custom Les Paul or the SG's of the years before.

T
his dirtiest tone has to be the stage 2 set. amazing how he switched from that one to the clean tones of the 80's bands. i especially like his 88 tone

I'm especially fond of FZ's early Seventies guitar tone, like on Overnite Sensation or Roxy and Elsewhere.

The Zoot Allures-version of Black Napkins has great tone as well, especially in the middle of the solo where it sounds 'robot-like' (can't really explain this properly...). What kind of guitar pedal is he using there?

Didn't Dweezil do a patch for the Zoom effects processor that pretty much matched that effect? I've got the cheap 505 pedal, and that effect is programmed in on it. I know DZ did some patches for them when the Zoom was first coming out.
I don't remember if the patch had a name or not.

T

For me Frank's best guitarwork and therefore is best guitartones are the following:

On Hot Rats (a virtuoso coming out...)
His best guitarwork (in my humble opinion) in the 70's was the following:
1971-1972-1973-1977-1978-1979
His 1981 bits are equally awesome, but his best ever guitarplaying he ever performed was during the 1982 tour:
this reduces Jimi Hendrix to thin air.......

I got a Cheesy little Zoom 505 Guitar effect pedal for about $50 that has the "ship Ahoy" effect

I love the tone on 'Yo Mamma'. To me it sounds like there is a slight effervescent quality ( not buzz, you understand). A slight fizz that makes it sound alive. This is my fave guitar tone of all time.
Eddie's tone on the 5150 album comes second.
