Ive always wondered if FZ had any pets... Or if he was an animal person. Does anyone know if he had any little critters running about back in the day?

I think I recall he had a parakeet named Bird Reynolds, and I think he had at least one cat... I'm sure someone here will clear this up within the next 5 minutes, complete with links to source material.

He definitely had several pets. His only requirement was that he names them.

It wasn't a parakeet, it was a cockatiel.

I recall an interview where Zappa's family has just adopted a new dog; the kids come running downstairs and ask Zappa to name it.
During that time, Zappa gives a list of a lot of pets he has/had. Seemed like LOADS.
And, I'm not sure if it still exists, KUR used to have a page which pointed out all the instances of animal activity in Zappa's music. It was interesting. Made me look at him in a new way.

He mentioned it in "The Real Frank Zappa Book".
The bird got injured, and the cat ate him.
Also, Diva would wave her arms in front of the bird and say "Tidal Wave!", and Bird would dance.

From The Real Frank Zappa Book:

You Name It

It has traditionally been my job to name things around the house. When somebody brings a cat or a dog home, everyone waits until I name it, and then that's what we call it – with very few exceptions. ["Go find the grouchy guy and get him to name this damn thing."]

We had a sheep dog named Fruney. He eventually turned into Frunobulax, the monster in the song "Cheepnis."

The oldest and most durable citizen in our pet collection was Gorgo (short for Gorgonzola, one of the Grunt People in the original Captain Beefheart screenplay), a vile-tempered Siamese, recently deceased.

We used to have a great bird – a cockatiel, which I named Bird Reynolds. He would sit on my shoulder and talk to me. Bird also liked to sit on the edge of our Ping-Pong table when it was folded up in the living room.

I don't know how or why Moon ever decided to do this, but one day we found her staring at Mr. Reynolds, with her arms out, flapping them, saying: "Tidal wave! Tidal wave!" For some reason, this caused Mr. Reynolds to dance sideways along the top edge of the folded table. It was infallible. All she had to do was stand in front of him, hold her arms out and say, "Tidal wave," and we had action.

A raccoon, brought home for a visit, injured Mr. Reynolds, and, while he was recovering and incapable of defending himself, he met an untimely end when one of the cats stuck his paw into the cage and swatted him in the middle of the night.

The business of naming things had its heyday in the times of the ancient Egyptians. It was believed then that, in order to successfully negotiate the voyage to the afterlife, the deceased tourist was required to know the names of everything he might encounter along the way, as he would be required to ask permission to pass from each and every one of these entities or inanimate objects. This included things like doorsills, doorknobs, paving stones, etc., etc. In other words, folks, some schmuck with a golden hat on had to dream up all the names, then keep them a secret, so that later, another schmuck who was dead would have to memorize them, just so he could qualify for the Egyptian equivalent of Pee-wee's Big Adventure.

I was married to Frank before Gail

"And he loved cats! At one point in the early sixties, we had 4 cats and 3 gave birth to 5 kittens each. We had 19 cats of which we found homes for 8 pairs and kept the rest. It was joyous. Another side of Frank that nobody knows about. He is missed."
