Me and my wife went to the opera tonight (Verde's The Masked Ball). Two things happened there besides an opera:

1) We got frisked in the parking lot because we have an INVADE IRAQ? NO! bumper sticker. Imagine a terrorist so stupid he would go to the opera (?) with an anti-war bumper sticker....

2) While tuning up for the second act, a trumpet player played a few bars of Uncle Meat. Was Verde turning over in his grave, or rockin' it?

Just goes to show that you can't escape either crazy war stuff OR Frank Zappa references (if you listen for them, they're there) these days.

Actually, this was my first opera. I was struck by how similar opera and FZ's music are, in some ways.
1. Do you mean "my wife and I?"

2. Did they actually tell you that the reason you were being frisked was because of the bumper sticker?

3. Did you giggle like a schoolgirl as the "frisking" was taking place?

4. Was the trumpet player really playing Uncle Meat or were you just, in fact, delerious?

5. The last opera I attended was a matinee performance of Carmen at the Met in NYC circa 1985...the highlight was that after the show we learned that the Lincoln Tunnel (back to NJ) had been closed down due to a structural defect...we sat in traffic without moving for, I swear, 90 minutes...when we finally did move, it was another half hour before we broke free of the jam up...we eventually headed down to the village and had dinner and drinks until around 11 pm waiting for the traffice to clear up. Funny, but that's what I remember the most from that day.

6. As per the terms of our agreement, please immediately wire the sum of $10 to my account for posting to this thread.

Thank you and have a nice day. ;D
Actually, this was my first opera. I was struck by how similar opera and FZ's music are, in some ways.
I can see that. Zappa and Beefheart wrote the first known rock opera. Zappa was a fan of Groucho Marx. Groucho Marx was in a movie called "A Night at the Opera" which is also the tittle of a Queen album, and the last line of that album is 'Any way the wind blows' which is, of course, the name of a song on Freak Out.
