How about discussing Zappa's guitars?
He's played a bunch of different guitars, but I've seen him mostly playing Gibson SG.

Zappa made brilliant use of the wah wah pedal.
Zappa's tone is unique. Does anyone know the exact point where he started using his "signature" sound, heard on for example in "i'm the slime"'s beginning.

[quote author=Ronnys_Noomies link=board=rant;num=1036474169;start=0#4 date=11/05/02 at 15:09:52]Hey, does anyone have any information on the pedals or rack mount stuff he used to get his unbelievable distorted live guitar sound? I'm especially interested in his sound with the 88 band, but I love his tone from about the Roxy album on. I know his guitars were hot wired, but I don't know what amps he was using in 88, nor do I have any idea what he had in line between guitar and amp.[/quote]
Yeah, me too I'd be very interrested in knowing what guitar/amp/effects(named) he used on this and this song. I'm very impressed by his 'clean' sound which is one of the best I've heard.

On the intro of I'm the slime you can hear that almost every guitarnote is accompanied by a kick on the (I suppose) basedrum. Great effect. [/quote]

I heard somewhere that Frank always left the wah pedal ON, or perhaps most of the time. I can hear in a lot of live stuff how that may be true. If so, that's a ballsy thing to do in my opinion - a hard tone to master.

BF
Zappa used a flanger into a sample and hold for the ship ahoy sound ( among other effects... distortion, etc )
:)
soundcheck for franks guitar was often just dialing-in his onboard parametric eq so that he could tune his guitar's feedback to the room he was playing :o
:oright on the edge of feedback :o[move][glow=green,6,10000]FRANKZAPPAFRANKZAPPAFRANKZAPPA [/glow][/move]
