If your guitar is an acoustic ~ do not stand on it.

Also, generally speaking, pluck the strings with your finger or a pick instead of beating them with a frozen chicken.

Do not scratch the guitar with your belt buckle.

You may play the guitar using your teeth only if you have good dental insurance.

Learn you chords and what's in it. Learn the formula that's behind every chord (find a piano so you 'see') so you will be able to play a chord you never played before just because you know the 'formula'. Learn the differences between a major and the 3 minor scales. Learn about the blue notes. From these things, you will be able to figure out some improvisations.

It will keep you busy for a lifetime.

correct posture / holdin the darn thin correctly is surprisingly useful if yer can get used to doin it right - as with holdin anything right ( a golf club - not that i partate in that activity cause i definitly dont ) it feels weird / incorrect at first.

also frank said - dont forget , its not as hard as people make out . remember that - it aint a deal.
also - the chicken and the monkey / left hand right hand analogie - i have recently tried it and it works !

also - practice things both as fast as yer can and also as slow as yer can - that way yer hit the notes right.

mungo ( btw - i suck )

If your guitar has a whammy bar, make sure you sterilize it before you insert it into any orifice, whether it be yours or someone else's.

Learn to play the main themes of "Zoot Allures", "Watermelon In Easter Hay" and "Black Napkins". Great stuff to play. "Toads Of The Short Forest" is fun as hell too! 8)
