I've read The Post Office several times. It is hilarious. Bought a "Bukzine" once. To my surprise the FZ toilet poster was in there too, with some writing covering his name. There was no mention of Zappa in there... it looked like they were using the picture as an ad for the magazine.

dunno how movie-makers do justice to a story like this
but .. i'm intrigued

http://www.salon.com/books/feature/2006/03/10/fante/

Quote:
If it weren't for Charles Bukowski, who regarded Fante as his (please excuse the term, but it applies) literary godfather and who dedicated poems to him, it's likely that few would remember Fante's name today. Bukowski, who was known in the early part of his literary career to go around shouting, "I am Arturo Bandini!" in tribute to Fante's ebullient, raw-nerved literary alter ego, was instrumental in getting Fante's books back into print in the late '70s, shortly before Fante's death in 1983

I've read a dozen or so of his works, including the posthumous "Slouching Toward Nirvana", which I really enjoyed. I think The New Yorker magazine had an article about him perhaps a year or so ago. His work rings true, and he reminds me of Zappa in that he takes on everyone at one time or another. ;D

I gave a copy of the book he did with R. Crumb to my brother.

Captain something or other. I read it or parts of it before giving it. It wasn't as good I thought as his other books.

-have the video 'Barfly' & the book 'Hollywood'-but as far as all that poetry,I don't.I use to live in the 'beat' part of San Francisco(North Beach) & attended beat- poetry readings...I still hear that shit in my head,so I guess I'm slightly jaded as far as poetry or poetry-prose is concerned...Believe me,many times have I thought of starting a bad-poem thread on this forum.Maybe I have already. But I'm sure Bukowski had something to say...As well as Charles Baudelaire...

I've read The Post Office and one more that I can't remember the title of. It describes his upbringing and childhood (Ham on Rye?). I remember one chapter describing how whilst attending a football match him and his friend could see up though the wooden slats on one of the audience stands and see up a ladies dress. You remember things like that!
I need to read some of his stuff cause I really enjoyed those two

Guess I don't get out much. I saw the name on this thread and thought it was about a serial killer.
