How can you have a poll and leave out JETHRO TULL?
Surely Tull's album 'Thick As A Brick' is the mother of all concept albums.
The flute in rock! I'd call that progressive.

Shame on you and your crappy poll!

I've voted for Genesis because Selling England By The Pound and The Lamb are my favourite Prog Rock albums.

That's what I was thinking! Tull rules the prog scene for me.
Although I may like Minstrel a little better than Thick!

Yeah, a mistake on my part. Thought of Tull soon after I posted this topic, but you're not allowed to edit your own polls as soon as someone has voted.

I wouldn't classify Tull as a Prog Rock Band in general. That's the reason why I voted for Genesis that was classic Prog Rock till early 80's imo.

There are Tull albums with some more prog elements like Thick As A Brick and Passion Play but the most albums combined these elements with Blues, Folk, Hard Rock, Jazz and Classic and don't forget their late New Wave album Under Wraps.

For youse whose picked Floyd...

Do you care that they were only occasionally prog? Most of the time, they were a regular ole rock band (although a very good one!). Other times, they were psychadelic, which is arguably the polar opposite of prog. For the last 20 years or so, they have made barely any new good albums at all.
On the other hand, King Crimson continues to make attempts at progress. Yes still tries, although they tend to have too much wispy Jon Anderson stuff holding them back. He's really cuckoo over the edge with his Newage babbling.
I saw Genesis on the 3 Sides Live tour over 20 years ago and they were nearly dead then, unless there must be some misunderstanding, there must be some kind of mistake. :P Since then, they've gotten approximately 4 bajillion times worse. Sure, I like Lamb LDOB, but its not good enough to make up for gems like 'Taking It All Too Hard', 'That's All', and 'Invisible Touch'.
I can't knock Rush as a choice. Although I hate most of their post-Signals material, I can't deny that they work at it.
ELP was a good band, if overrated imo. Lotsa bombast, but ... ahh, well, I do like Tarkus a good bit. Jeremy Bender wasn't pretentious! :)

Floyd is very progressive... Things like One of These Days, Careful w/ That Axe Eugene, Ummaguma, The Wish you were here album, The Wall with all its concepts, Animals, everything... Except for the 80s, is all progressive to me...

I have no opinion on where Tull would best fit, but it reminds me of something silly: Didn't Tull win a Grammy for best Heavy Album some years ago (causing an uproar among heavy people)?

BTW: I voted KC; but this is my last poll. I think polls force too much discipline on your thoughts. We always wander astray in the threads anyway (as I do now), so I prefer non-polled threads (except perhaps where the alternatives are a well-defined and exhaustive set - like "Bush or Kerry" and the like).

Yes, they won a grammy for A Crest Of A Knave, beating the favourites, Metallica ( they were up with their self titled "Black" album-which is crud )....

I like the later adrian belew incarnation of king crimson. the way the guitars play off each other is more interesting to me with odd time signatures. belew brought alot of good songs. Some people aren't into that band and prefer the earlier heavier stuff.

I think progressive is a good term but gets a bad connotation with the use of orchestras and overblown stage shows. More interested in the canterbury sounds of gilgamesh, national health, hatfield and the north. That music was influenced by Frank zappa BTW.

really i don't agree psychedelic rock is the opposite of prog. they both have some aspects that overlap. Rock music was supposed to be progressive anyway. alot of prog is on the dippy side. the stuff they're calling prog now is weak. it never really takes off. so it is a difficult term to come to terms with.

well, I posted that five years ago.

Hi,

The list at PA (ProgArchives) is sad and pathetic and not representative of the topic and conversation. Their list is a fan list, and not about the "artist" ... and as such, it is jaded, and incomplete and disrespectful, and London invented the world and their imperialistic ideas are still alive and they won't quit! On top of it, Robert Fripp has said several times the music he makes is not progressive ... and we flip him the finger! ...

I much prefer the lesser commercial progressive bands that were NOT English and full of shit and over-opinionated concepts and ideas ... and will take Amon Duul 2, Ange, Banco del Muttuo Soccorso, Magma, Can, Carmen, Frank Zappa, Tangerine Dream, Riuichi Sakamoto, Return to Forever, Egberto Gismonti and others that pushed the envelop in creativity, not just some pop/rock music, that people think is "progressive" because it has a jagged guitar, an odd time part, and some other bizarre music notation ... like that was never the case before in the history of music! And to my ears, even the Grateful Dead in their really early days of playing all night and doing cuts one hour long, were far more progressive than some of that crap listed on that top ten. But somehow, the powers that be determined that "improvisation" can not be a part of "progressive" music, and guess where all those people got their work from?

In the end, PA is acting just like another top of the pops ... how english of them!

Stickmen were great. Belew Power Trio were amazing (my 5th time seeing them). Adrian, Tony and Pat were fantastic. The double trio Belew my mind. Seeing this show in a small club was insane. If Fripp doesn't want to join in the fun, then these guys should just tour as a double trio.

DITTO (but make it 2 gallons)

I think Hendrix was more progressive than Floyd..listen to his jazzy out-there soloing on the Woodstock double CD
