Nice find ursinator! Hell it's great! He's smart to hide FZ behind the Tangerine Dream stuff,I went to look at my playlist and the ones that sez Zappa on them were almost in halfed.23 outta 58 FZ vids I had up,have been takin' down or yanked off. I'm listening to FZ,MOI, (perhaps the most outragous bunch Arlinington,TX 3/11/73 [so far]) right now.Except for the irritating giggling girl this is a very good quality listen.(on headphones) Inca Roads with no lyrics and the solo before Montana are sweet indeed! Nice gem! 8)

Many many thanks to all contributors to this thread, I've just spent the last couple of days and my data cap trawling through from page one, even though over 1/2 the clips have been "removed" still heaps of gems to see and hear, some quite emotion provoking interviews, and of course the music the fantastic music.
Thank you thank you and thank you!

I'm digging the piano improve of written pieces. This is great stuff.I love the way FZ explains his pieces to the little audience and the musicians. To bad the visual part of the show is missing, from what FZ's sayin' this has to be one of the first psychedelic art/film/music colage ever. His writting skills at this age are very impressive. After this listen,I wonder how Frank drifted off into Rock & Roll? This is good stuff and humerous too.But definetly not R&R!
On to the string pieces! Yowser! :D

Because he couldn't have his compositions played! I think this was the rare exception (and he paid for the performance).
FZ talks a little about how he went from "classical" to rock in this interview:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MLMi_ab5 ... ure=relmfu

I think the link was in a recent post in this thread (which is very much worth following)

He was always rock and roll stared writing it later than Serious music.

FZ on an interview from the 1992 Zappa! tribute magazine (Keyboard and Guitar Player):

Actually, the first time I had any of it ["serious" music] performed was at Mount St. Mary's College in 1962. I spent $300 and got together a college orchestra, and I put on this little concert. Maybe less than a hundred people showed up for it, but the thing was actually taped and broadcast by KPFK. (...) By the time I graduated from high school in '58, I still hadn't written any rock and roll songs, although I had a little rock and roll band in my senior year. I didn't write any rock and roll stuff until I was in my 20s. All the music writing that I was doing was either chamber music or orchestral, and none of it ever got played until this concert at Mount St. Mary's.

Thank's both Vietato & cleon, the Q & A at the end of this concert is a real eye opener.Frank explains it himself! It's great! He sez he earned some of the money for this concert ($300) from The Big Surfer song and such, that's how he made his living at that time! Funny comments about Cage vs Zappa music. :D
Is this before,during or after,Studio Z? Anyone?

jpd,do you have a copy of that one? (The Big Surfer) What's the year/month of release,if you do? :?:
thanx manx

1963 Studio Z FZ said in one interview that he made band names up and took records around radio stations for air play.

I've only just started watching this and there is an interesting version of King Kong from '68 shot in black and white that I haven't seen before after the regular Holiday in Berlin footage used in the Uncle Meat video;
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zG9JXqx7X4U

edit; this is a stonkoff version of KK!! Absolutely awesome. What I would do to go back and have been at this show 8)

Here's footage of an old underground video show in Vancouver, called, "Nite Dreems." It includes a pre-show interview with FZ from March 26, 1980 (which starts around the 9:23 mark of part 2 and continues into part 3) and a contest to win vinyl copies of Sheik Yerbouti, & Joe's Garage, Acts I, II & III...

Wow, K.K...I had no idea!

There are actually plans to revive The Cave, but on Granville St., at some point this year...

Thanx DB,according to the dates on the article,The Cave should be up and running now at the new Granville site.So how is it? Stalagtites, malagtites,Neadrathals ect.,hanging all over da place?

Did it get moved or built yet? I did see Bette Midler there and some Elvis impersonater by the name of Morris. But the shows that I liked were B.B. King,Bobby Blue Band and more of the soul-blues shows that were great to dine and dance to.Everynight I'd see Joanie Manary there too. She's what kept me coming back! You betcha!

According to this, it's going to be in The Rolston and will be open in the summer or fall:

http://www.mikestewart.ca/the-rolston-a ... e#more-971

Once it does open, I'll let you know more...

Actually, since the original Cave closed in 1981, when I was about 2 years old, I'm sure you know more about it than me...

DB, thanks for the Nite Dreems vids...never heard of the show, but it looked fun. Is the second part of the interview up? Did'nt know Frank wanted to sign The B52's! That woulda been charp an' cherry...too bad he did'nt have enough moola to lure them away from evil Warner Bros. He's very relaxed here, just shows what can happen when he's talking to someone who is'nt asking stupid questions.
