According to the Idiot Bastard Son website..

200 Motels coming out on DVD soon. Well, it’s being released by a company called Intergroove, who also released the Zeppelin Live At Earls Court 1975 DVD

I found this on IMWAN.com

" Yes, it's coming out in early 2009. I've been sitting on the solicitation info waiting for Amazon to put up a pre-order listing for it:

2009 DVD - Right from the start, Frank Zappa had a weakness not only for music, but also for filmmaking. But it was only in 1971 that he finally managed to convince MGM to provide funding for a joint movie called 200 Motels, a surreal story about a touring band that tries to weather the usual adversities of life on the road: frustrated band members, anonymous cities, local rednecks, groupies, drugs, you name it. '200 Motels' is a bizarrely psychedelic rock opera and a serious piece of multimedia art. The innovative movie - shot on videotape and later transferred to film by using state-of-the-art technology - had a sustainable influence on the aesthetics of later rock videos. "

Why? ZFT don't own it.

I have posted elsewhere about this. It seems it will be widely available.

Well, one reason would be...

So if there is a legitimate release coming out soon, it may a have a better transfer, and some extras.
The boot may be an attempt to get what money they can, from unwary fans, before the proper release.

Well, this has to be the unauthorized DVD released in september as most online catalogs indicate the same barcode (7319855463544) whatever the label.

This is not obvious, it could be grey market which is not better...

I wasn't aware that website traded in boots - but I agree, even if it's a 'grey' release, I'd rather something with some mastering to speak of and some special features if there could be any. If only it could be like the Ryko/MGM release of the soundtrack, that took quite a bit of care to make the package worthy of the FZ reissue program. Well, I thought it did - others may know better and I'm happy to read their opinions.

Given what the ZFT does, and the resources (archives) at its disposal, if I owned the rights to 200 Motels, I'd be making an approach and saying, 'how can I do this in a way that will improve it, and make you get behind it and support it?' But you'd have to be more interested in art than commerce to do that.

I no longer believe it to be a boot, merely a poor quality release at worst, seeing as my local music shop - one that wouldn't dare trade in boots since it's a chart shop, its sales used to tabulate the top 40 - has it in stock.

Hi,

I just bought this one: http://www.jpc.de/jpcng/poprock/detail/ ... sk=hitlist

which probably is identical to: http://tinyurl.com/586sqk

The quality is in no way worse than any of the commercial VHS versions I've seen. If there will be an official release soon with ZFT involvement they should better hurry up and make a least some official announcement.

Th.

Well folks, ZPT does not own 2M's copyright. United Artists does. According to Gail (at a Q&A session), when BABY SNAKES was screened at The Egyptian Theater on Thurs, Aug 17, 2006 (164' - directors cut; print from ZFT):

"--she does not own any prints of 200 motels. she said she has the rights to produce a "delux", her word not mine, 200 motels dvd, but cannot locate a print. she said UA gave prints away on 16mm for some reason, so there are those floating around, but like she said, she hasn't see any. as far as the original master video tapes, they were erased by UA or someone to reuse on another shoot.
--she said she has a full alternate sound track to 200 motels. wouldn't it be nice to see a dvd with both sound tracks available? Heck, throw in the alternate sound track as a cd too."
---quote from IMDb FZ-thread posted by deanowest (who was in attendance): http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0953261/boar ... 1#52622126

My problem here is that the "delay" could be because no real archival print exists over at U.A.? And this is because the original v-tape master & 35mm neg's might be damaged or no longer exist???

I do hope they release the official version soon. I'd definitely buy it. I don't like buying bootlegs. I can't wait to see the movie again. I wore my vhs out years ago.

this has the wrong track list! if anybody's seen the movie, you can tell its wrong. the last song is the 200 motels finale, which isn't even on that pages track list. i'm pretty sure there's more wrong with it.

I heard that Jerry Seinfeld taped it at a local theater! But there's a part where Elaine is dancing in it!

All DVD's of 200 Motels currently for sale are BOOTLEGS taken from the MGM/UA VHS tape. No exceptions that I have seen, I don't care how reliable and/or wholesome the sales outlet appears to be. Even though the ZFT does not own the film (MGM/UA does) they would get music publishing royalties from an official release.

I have ripped my Laserdisc to DVD and until there is a DVD release with the MGM/UA logo on the disc, this is the best quality available. If you want to check out this classic and essential film without lining the pockets of bootleggers that ARE ripping off the ZFT, send me a private e-mail with a suggestion for a trade. No cash, that would be evil.

Yeah, the fact that there's been a Laserdisc means that it made the transition to digital at some point. I'd be curious to know how the quality is on it. I'm guessing it's in full screen? Too bad, you know, working Laserdisc players aren't too easy to come by these days.

I've seen it once, and that was good enough for me. I'll listen to the soundtrack once in awhile.

The laserdisc was mastered from the same source materials as the VHS so the only improvement in quality is the result of the format rather than any remastering.

I believe that since 200 Motels was originally shot on videotape and transferred to film that it has always been in a 4:3 full-frame aspect ratio. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Finally, there is music in the film that is not on the soundtrack and vice-versa, so you really do need both.
