Gary Lucas, "The Thinking Man's Guitar Hero" (The New Yorker) was
filmed in Amsterdam in the fall of 2008 by his friend Paul B,
performing in the courtyard of the Hollandsche Schouwburg, a former
Dutch theatre that became a center for deportation of the Jewish
community during World War Two, during which time 104,000 Dutch Jews
were shipped off to be killed in the death camps (

The theatre site is now a monument and a museum dedicated to the perished Jewish community.
Here Gary performs his song "Jedwabne", written to commemorate the
annihilation of the Jewish community of Jedwabne (including family on
his mother's side) by their neighbors in a little town in Poland in
July 1941. In July 2001 the Polish government issued a formal apology
to surviving Jewish family members from Jedwabne, and Gary traveled
there to represent his family at the ceremonies, which were televised
all over the world (

song "Jedwabne" is a result of that journey. Here he follows it with
an instrumental suffused with hope, entitled "Jump for Joy".
