So is this actually a legit release? The packaging looks a little amateurish to me.

How can you tell? It doesn't look any worse than the 1990s VHS.

The VHS was at least distributed by a semi-reputable company. I guess I've just seen so many DVD boots of 200 Motels over the years that I'm suspicious of any release that isn't from a well-known company.

True, there are a lot of dodgy copies out there but this one does seem to have the stamp of a reputable filmmaker...

I wonder if the sound has been improved? It was always a bit murky, I thought...

I'll wait for more info, but Tony Palmer was in good position to have a good copy.

On a Zappa forum, one might expect that...

Tony Palmer appears reputable enough to not start selling anything he does not have any rights to.

It is interesting, however, how all the wheeling and dealing have come through. How can he more or less sell it from what appears to be a personal website? That is the peculiar thing. On the other hand, it is quite an old film, and not one to make a fortune of. I personally never found it that interesting; it plays exactly like what it is: A week's random experiments built around some pretty good music. Some of the results are funny and exciting, some of it not too interesting (and the sound is not so good).

MGM still shows it, so I would be somewhat suspicious about this release. There is the possibility that the copyrights on this are so nightmarishly complicated that a true official release will never be possible. I assume GZ is still trying to get this back, but who knows. MGM obviously still had the masters for the STEREO recording. They also obviously had the rights to the film, my VHS copy is released through MGM. The laser disc was produced by MGM. I don't know why MGM didn't put it out on DVD, unless all the other sales were quite low. The CD from Ryko contains some film clips, commercials, radio spots. So I think they were planning to release it, but that never happened.

Well, according to the copyright office here:

http://cocatalog.loc.gov/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?v1=1&ti=1,1&CNT=50&HC=1&RelBibID=6482142&HostBibID=6482144&ProfileCode=RECLNK&SEQ=20100112171906&PID=xjkzqcnoYo2K4Oq_w_21PypHyDDB

MGM and Warner brothers own the rights to 200 Motels (as of 2005, anyway.)

CD Universe now has this available for pre-order. Though, like many of you, I'm not sure if I should order it just yet...

Cd universe you say? Does that mean it has a US manufacturer as well?
I only ask because the pricing is rather low to be an import item. This might be the big one...
Now if we get word of simultaneous Asian distribution as well, that would really be something.

I don't see it on Amazon yet, but I'll keep checking.

I have a hunch it'll be listed there pretty soon...

If you follow the information on CD Universe, it is the Tony Palmer DVD. They are offering a sale price reduced from the list price of $19.95.

Well, not sure about that revised release date at the Voiceprint site anymore as I now have my copy from them. Looks a little better than my old VHS copy, and the Director's audio commentary is pretty interesting.

What does a little better entail, is the picture clear, colors bright? How's the sound, mono or stereo?
