I thought it would be great to have a seperate module on the 1966 Mothers. Here's an Image to start it off. Anything of interest please post here.

From left to right, we have Roy Estrada, Jimmy Carl Black, a guitarist which probably is Del Kacher (I don't think he looks like Steve Mann or Jim Fielder), Billy Mundi, FZ, and Ray Collins. There's no keyboard player.

After that he [FZ] asked if I would play the Shrine auditorium in LA. There I met Van Dyke Parks, Roy Estrada, and I believe Billy Mundi and Don Preston later. I also remember Carl Black and Ray Collins but I believe Frank changed players according to availability.

We played UC Santa Barbara and a lot of club dates including The Whiskey A-Go Go. (it was the name in 1965.) We also did a TV show called David Susskind Presents Freak Out. We filmed this at TTG studios in Hollywood.

Yes that is me with the glasses and conservative cap. That was at the Whiskey in 1965 or 1966. Frank and I had just finished a recording of a song called "Space Boy" in my garage studio in the Hollywood Hills.

And:

Yes, absolutely that IS me playing with Frank on the Susskind show.

In those days I was told I needed glasses since high school and just kept wearing them. It was a midwest ( Indiana) thing to do and Frank thought it was cool to look intellectual, which I really am.

NOTICE THE FREAK OUT COVER ON THE TABLE!

Yes, I am a great fan of Elliot Ingber. How can Wolfie [Wolfgangs Vault] release this material for free streaming across the internet?

This stuff is GOLDDUST, but its free? Did FZ and the Mothers sign something in June 1966 so that it is able to be heard and downloaded 40 years later.

Was Herb Cohen the manager then.

I hope that FZ(ZFT) and the Mothers get their Royalties each time it's free streamed, and Downloaded. I have to say I am grateful for the site, but unsure what gives of their business model

Not all of the music can be downloaded to record, but recently they put together a system to buy concerts, as of now no MOI are available to buy , just to listen. And only a couple at that, now there are a ton of other groups, a really good Billy Cobham concert is available.

What is the difference between Downloading a Wolfgang concert, and capturing a streaming event for nil payment?

I've never bothered to investigate this further but I had heard that you can buy utilities that enable the capture of streams. The fact of the matter is that the data has to pass through your computer at some point so there must be a way to capture it.

You can capture anything. Streams of video or audio.

I recognize that the timpani is place between both drumsets. I am aware of Jimmy Carl Black using the timpani. Did Billy Mundi every play Timpani onstage?

I saw a cheesy little special about sex in the 60's (one of those exploitation cheapies) on Comcast On Demand once which to my shock contained a couple brief scenes of the Mothers of invention and this still looks like it comes from that very footage. Same clothes, same stage, same line-up, same guy sitting on his ass.

.

A number of films took snippets of the Mondo Hollywood footage, that is what this is

Here's something in French:

5. Programme distribue dans Los Angeles pendant l'ete 1966 probablement execute par FZ lui-meme.

This is the caption for Poster August 13 at the Shrine ..You Gotta be 18.

I cannot scan the image page 38 from Alain Dister book 'Frank Zappa et les Mothers of Invention, because it will break my copy, but it clearly illustrates what a talented artist/graphics man Frank was.

Does anyone have an original they can post up,or scan from a beat up copy of this book?

reference to 'son of guambo', and a Salvador Dali painting of the 1920's?

It is a wonderful artifact. I cannot help but feel that I have seen it somewhere else.

Regarding this "Space Boy" recording that Del Kacher says he recorded with FZ. Is anyone familiar with this recording? Is it available anywhere on the internet?
