I need to develop a list of 10 FZ songs that will go into a play list for a party, these songs will be heard by mostly non-Zappa fans. The criteria would be the most aesthetically pleasing, now I understand what I and you all too would want to play, but we are dealing with people who would not appreciate the subtlety of a challenging FZ riff. The idea is to get 10 songs into the party rotation that may or may not open these neophytes’ eyes to the music we love. Rather than over power, I am looking for suggestions for songs that the average Joe listener would say “that was cool who was that?” I will give an example two years ago I played “Lemme Take You To The Beach”, everyone liked it asked who it was and I actually made someone a CD. So this is not necessarily a top ten list, it for lack of a better word is a list of ten (I hate to say this) acceptable songs for the uninitiated. Thank you.

I hate dancing and so, in my wild youth, I would sneak up to the record player and put on "We're Only In It For The Money". It was surprising how quickly the room emptied. At about the age of 35 I realized that 95% of all parties are crap anyway, so I've generally stopped going; however Plook, I'm sure your party will belong to the 5% that isn't crap. Why not try going for the "hits", or ones that were supposed to be "hits"?
e.g.
Happy Together (Noone will guess FZ, if they don't know him well))
Bobby Brown (No 1 in Germany, though I don't think they quite understood the words, but WTF, noone listens to words anymore anyway)
Dancin' Fool
Don't Eat The Yellow Snow
Peaches (Filmore Version)
Why Don't You Do Me Right?
Tears Began To Fall
Tell Me You Love Me (Tinsletown) (I'm really stretching here)
Big Leg Emma
Valley Girl (the biggest hit, but probably the most uncommercial track)

Goblin Girl
Dinah-Moe Humm
The Torture Never Stops
Willie The Pimp
Treacherous Cretins
Who Are The Brain Police?
Brown Shoes Don't Make It
Keep It Greasey
Black Napkins
Stink Foot

Just play the "Fillmore East: June 1971" album. It was a hit at all the parties I went to.
(Unless you hang around with Pojama People.)

Hmmm, let's see....

1. Any of the random poppier tunes from Freak Out!
2. A guitar solo or two (Variations on The Secret Carlos Santana, or Sexual Harrasment in the Workplace spring to mind as decent party tunes)
3. Something funky and humourous, like Titties N Beer or Carolina Hardcore
4. Something challenging in an accesible disguise, like Black Page #2 or Pound for a Brown, the ZINY versions
5. A nice cut from Overnite Sensation (Zomby Woof or the underrated Fifty Fifty, maybe even Dinah-Moe-Humm)
6. Dancin' Fool
7. Valley Girl
8. Peaches en Regalia
9. Fine Girl (perhaps one of the catchiest tunes in the catalog)
10. When everybody is shit-canned and sloppy and half awake at three or four am: Black Napkins (field-tested!)

For me there is no perfect 10 Best Party songs
for those unfamiliar with FZ. Why not just play
Over-Nite Sensation & Apostrophe (')
but I think quickly off the top of my head I could select some songs from a few different periods
that have distinctive vocal presence to each that could catch the average listener
in a casual way where even having FZ bands doing a sampling of some covers.

For example
1)Road Ladies/ Chunga's Revenge
2)Valarie(Lewis/Robinson)/ Burnt Weeny Sandwich
3)Here Lies My Love(Martin/Dobard)/ YCDTOSA Vol 5
4)Montana/ Over-Nite Sensation
5)Po-Jama People/ One Size Fits All
6)Find Her Finer/ Zoot Allures
7)Wonderful Wino/ The Lost Episodes
8)(segue)Beauty Knows No Pain, Charlie's Enormous Mouth, Any Downers? Conehead/ You Are What You Is
9)Bobby Brown Goes Down (remixed)/ Have I Offended Someone?
10)Muffin Man/ Bongo Fury

Sorry there were just so many vocalists, by no means was each lineup and or lead vocalist represented
but I was quickly thinking more about a general overview of some catchy songs than representing alumni
or FZs signature guitar performances.

While Doug’s suggestion is noble it would require playing the whole album straight through and non-Zappa faithful would end up with Zap-exhaustion. Although Watermelon in Easter Hay is one of my favorites, it will be played at my funeral, it is too deep for a party. I had been considering something very much along the lines of Zombies suggestion:

1. Any of the random poppier tunes from Freak Out!
2. A guitar solo or two (Variations on The Secret Carlos Santana, or Sexual Harrasment in the Workplace spring to mind as decent party tunes) - I was thinking Winos Do Not March
3. Something funky and humourous, like Titties N Beer or Carolina Hardcore – I have a clean recording of ZPZ Magic Fingers/Carolin Hard-core Ecstasy
4. Something challenging in an accesible disguise, like Black Page #2 or Pound for a Brown, the ZINY versions - Undecided
5. A nice cut from Overnite Sensation (Zomby Woof or the underrated Fifty Fifty, maybe even Dinah-Moe-Humm) – Great Idea
6. Dancin' Fool - Check
7. Valley Girl - Maybe
8. Peaches en Regalia - Check
9. Fine Girl (perhaps one of the catchiest tunes in the catalog) – Strictly commercial version
10. When everybody is shit-canned and sloppy and half awake at three or four am: Black Napkins (field-tested! - Hmmmm

So Far the common suggestions are:

1.)Inca Roads
2.)Peaches en Regalia
3.)Dont eat the yellow snow
4.)Dancin Fool
5.)Willie The Pimp
6.)Stink Foot
7.)Fine Girl
8.)Bobby Brown

Anymore ideas?

Well, my feeling is when it comes to Zappa there's no sense in being subtle. No matter what ten songs you put on, your guests will soon be scurrying over to the neighbor's house who's playing the Jimmy Buffet music.

But seriously, a good suggestion that I don't think anyone else has mentioned is Blessed Relief from the Grand Wazoo.

Trendy nailed it by suggesting one of my personal favorites from Lost Episodes Wonderful Wino, list is now 9, but if it goes over it will be cut time. The shin-dig is at the end of summer, but I will need download time for the estimated 12 hours the party usually last. These are all excellent choices.

So Far the common suggestions are:

1.)Inca Roads
2.)Peaches en Regalia
3.)Dont eat the yellow snow
4.)Dancin Fool
5.)Willie The Pimp
6.)Stink Foot
7.)Fine Girl
8.)Bobby Brown
9.) Wonderful Wino
10.) Zomby Woof

Anymore ideas?
Add or change as you see fit.
