That particular hat more than likely was given to him by a fan to wear.
The history of fans giving articles of clothing to FZ including hats was common.
I had given FZ a woven straw hat with colored felt musical notes on the front
that he wore at one of the Palladium 81' engagement shows. Being that FZ wore a
hat on the cover of YAWYI released only weeks prior to these shows it only seemed
fitting to wear one to a show and give it to Frank. In 1984 it was Kitchen Mittens.
If Frank was amused he did something with it and in the case with the Palladium shows
I think he was ever more so on the look out for interaction with the fans and how that could fit
into the show even if by 80' & 81' the audience participation moved
away from live-on-stage bring the fan up from the seat to live accepting articles of clothing and wearing it
or getting into dialog on the object.
Where to buy that hat?
The fan who wore it, gave it to FZ may know better than anyone managing the archive of such memorabilia
but the ZFT certainly are getting involved in some interesting merchandising trends of things that FZ wore.
Much of this practice seems as if it may be limited production. Get em' while they are hot.
I chucked some Fly Swatters on stage when Frank was performing in Milan back in 1988. He knew why I did it, and I berate the Italian people for not doing it themselves.
He used the Fly Swatters as batons for the rest of the tour, which I think was really cool. I would love to have a tape of the Milan show, as Frank and Ike sang about Fly Swatters for the rest of the evenings entertainment; I particularly recall Advance Romance undergoing a twisted transformation . I have some photo's, but would like to see some more.
