I got a copy of the Barcelona concert off of E-bay. I don't know the legal stuff.

That is because it is illegal.

Neither had I. So I tried to play along with nonsense talk. Sorry - I'll leave it to you to be funny. 8)

Let's get serious for a moment.

1. There is no official visual release from the '88 tour.

2. Considering the amount of shows the man played and considering that he was obsessed with recording as much as possible in audio, there are astonishingly few visual concert releases. And I mean complete plain concert footage. Not those official unsatisfactory stripped down "greatest hits" compilations like DHBIM, DRS, TTNS …

Reasons could be:
- Before the video age (< 1980) not much was filmed, because production would have been expensive
- Frank's interest in performing live had decreased in the eighties when it would have been cheaper to produce concert videos
- difficulties with the musicians union in the US
- the ZFT is preventing concert footage that was made by TV stations around the world from being released
- general problems with the rights of such footage - without legal activities from the ZFT
- technical problems with the material
- post production costs considering decreasing market interest in products like Zappa material

Nevertheless, I want more.

I wonder if the 1976 New York shows or the 1975 Royce Hall concerts have been professionally filmed, for instance. And how about a major '82-European- tour-Thomas-Nordegg-fisheye-lens-footage release like in Video From Hell?

Could it be that all we are goin' to get is a 6 minute QuickTime featurette of Joe
explaining where to find what video reel (on some heartbreakingly neglected-looking
shelf board behind the brooms and the ping-pong table, of course --

Has anyone noticed how desperately rotten the vault looks like these days -- that tape reel of
Apostrophe that Joe holds into the camera with all the greasy smears and fingerprints
all over it -- the worn and torn tape-box labels complete with terribly smeared original
crayon markings... --  ), only to discover that you wish no-one's ever
going to treat your personal posessions in such a way that they turn out to look like
the stuff that sits in the vault, 2006.

Suggested viewing: 'Peefeeyatko' The vault, ca. 1990

U were mentioning a lot of serious questions, for example:
"...considering decreasing market interest in products like Zappa material"
The market for music has become difficult in general, but how is the special situation with the heritage of Zappa? Who cares about him in the new millenium? Dweezil wants to sell a Hendrix-Zappa guitar, nobody gives a shit. The recent releases are not available in stores outside the US. Zappa only appears in the news today when his wife has won or lost a lawsuit against coverbands. In my eyes the whole situation looks a little bit like Buffallo described the state of the Zappa-basement...
The most mean thing that can happen is that the Zappas can't afford no shoes anymore, hope that day never will come :!:

A £300,000 bid which wasn't accepted  isn't exactly not giving a shit!

I know Dweezil will probably disagree with me, but that guitar has lost it's primary association with FZ, unless you consider both FZ and Jimi had shared the Strat body. I just think it a sad shame that the neck and whatever pickups Frank put on it during the mid 70's seem to have been completely replaced. Dweezil to his credit built the guitar after it had been neglected to what he wanted, and did so, so his dad could use it again, but Frank gave it to him anyway. I respect Frank because the equipment he used and modified served a purpose, and when the day was done there were other more pressing things to attend to. We are just fawning swine grateful for whatever pearls he might throw to us.

Replaced yes but how can it be said what oppstions he Dweezil had just fore sake maybe the pick ups which look like 11 pole slugs dimarzio was not there too be put back on also the neck.

It then disappeared for a spell. I found it in pieces under a staircase at the UMRK studio. I told Frank I found it and asked if he would like me to put it back together for him. He said, "Sure." The electronics were missing and the neck was damaged so I chose to rebuild it as a stock instrument from the original time period of the late 60's. Jay Black a master builder at the Fender custom shop built a fantastic neck with a flipped head stock - a nod to Jimi - and I procured some custom wound Lindy Fralin single coil pick ups for it.
Dweezil Zappa.

$750,000 bid was probably £300,000 when Cooper Owen offered the guitar 6 or 7 years ago. Dweezil had it on his web presence at FZ.com several years ago for $250,000 more, but it didn't sell, or he changed his mind selling it.

There is a much deeper story about the Strat body and what else Eric Barrett gave Frank in 69 published in one of Cesar Glebbeeks issues of 'Univibes'. I believe there was the neck still attached to the body in '69, and that was given away as a present by Dweezil as token of his gratitude. I have a feeling the neck (and this is where I feel is the value) FZ used was not broken. I think Rexy Bogue built it to Franks preferred Gibson scale. That issue of Univibes must predate 2005, probably 10 years old, as the person who sent me a photocopy died 5 years ago.

:( No 88 Band stuff on DVD....pity !

Mmmmm....So the topic changed into somekind of tech guitar talk. I´ll pass on that one.
Just don´t like gear talk.

YUP....Recently I explained my Kids that the way I experienced music when I was theire age was way more intens. Had to take the bus and travel 50 miles to the City where there was a
import record store. The excitement after buying the record with saved money on the way back home, reading the sleeve info over and over again. The thrill of listening for the first time and playing it over and over again. Kids today only need a mouseclick to get what they want for free. Preferably in 128kbs bitrate cause it consumes less disk space. They prefer Lady Gaga over FZ.

It's a marketed world....even in politics :!:

Yeah, only the body seems to have stayed the same.

And boy do I not like the gimmick of putting on an upside-down head stock. Hell, if one wants to emulate the Hendrix approach, the buy a left-hand Strat, turn it upside down, restring it and play it right handed. Allegedly, some of the Hendrix sound is attributable to the fact that he had the lower strings being where the higher strings was supposed to be placed over the pick-ups. Apparently this affected the sound. (So you should in principle get the effect by rewiring your pick ups?)

On topic: Not much concert footage exists. I think it is common for the times.

There was some major edits to the Barcelona footage broadcast broadcast later on TVE 17th May 1988, there was part of the speech that FZ was asked to read (in Spanish) which was boo'd by the audience, and an AD break during Madison Ave (I think) and I think the Beatles songs were chopped out. I am assuming that there only exists footage taped off the TV. I understand there are some moving images of a rehearsal/soundcheck.

Going Off topic;

Those photo's of Frank with his Hendrix Strat are so incredibly cool. Dweezil...put that neck back on even if you have to repair it.

There's a TV show that takes place on the 88 tour in Philadelphia. I've seen pieces of it. It's got some pretty interesting soundcheck footage and anti-drug interviews. I don't know if it's got any concert footage, aside from the soundcheck stuff.

The Barcelona DVD is great!

The Philadelphia Soundcheck material I have seen is Sleep Dirt, which is incredible. FZ has such mastery, and people are just wandering about! I hope there is more.

There is more than just Sleep Dirt. It is "very incredible" There are segments where he alone on the stage just plays away. He is totally absorbed, and spews out notes in rapid succession.

What is that Table Tennis player know for doing Porridge

Got too say folk comment about the neck, was never original i bet Hendrix broke it and the biggset crime there is Cutting it up for humbuckers.
Note even tho JH was known for his playing,he did it with basic stratocaster no EQ and i think is half of the respect he deserves is straight of the self i heard he never even bother with string height adjustmunts.

Back on topic still the best of the best from 1988
