Bat Chain Puller

Bat chain
Puller
Bat chain puller
Puller, puller

A chain with yellow lights
That glistens like oil beads
On its slick smooth trunk
That trails behind on tracks, and thumps
A wing hangs limp and retreats

Bat chain puller
Puller puller

Bulbs shoot from its snoot
And vanish into darkness
It whistles like a root snatched from dry earth
Sodbustin’ rakes with grey dust claws
Announces its coming in the morning
This train with grey tubes
That houses people’s very thoughts and belongings.

Bat chain puller
Puller puller

This train with grey tubes that houses people’s thoughts,
Their very remains and belongings.
A grey cloth patch
Caught with four threads
In the hollow wind of its stacks
Ripples felt fades and grey sparks clacks,
Lunging the cushioned thickets.
Pumpkins span the hills
With orange crayola patches.
Green inflated trees
Balloon up into marshmallow soot
That walks away in forty circles,
Caught in grey blisters
With twinkling lights and green sashes
Uuh
Pulled by rubber dolphins with gold yawning mouths
That blister and break in agony
In souls of rust
They kill gold sawdust into dust.

Bat chain puller,
Puller puller.

Don Van Vliet, 1976

Gary Lucas: My old friend Paul Berkholst gave me this "Don Van Vliet circa Trout Mask Replica doll" last night backstage as gift from him and his family (Approaching was a small child / With Statue of Liberty doll--Don Van Vliet, "The 1010th Day of the Human Totem Pole")

Question: Any chance of some Zappa/Beefheart nuggets we never heard being released?

Gail Zappa: There is, yes! We truly have some extraordinary tapes of them at “play” – with words. But first BCP later this year. Thanks for asking!

Great news  and Gail is communicating after all, when you dig deep enough. I guess it's forgivable that she doesn't like PR, although it's kinda strange that she hides her news and products so resolutely away from the public eye.

I paid an arm and half a leg to get this, and while it's rough in places I'm not disappointed! I love the way these guys assert themselves in the older stuff and show the connections from Shiny Beast to Safe as Milk and Clear Spot, especially. While we wait for Bat Chain Puller itself, it's worth recalling that this was a special and talented band, and they recorded a fine replacement in Shiny Beast 8)

It surely would have benefitted from some Don doodlings. I don't like that overwrought earth/golfball thing very much-- Ok, I know there's this quote, and everything, but I feel it just doesn't translate that well into the visual domain. Looks like it's been borrowed from one of those English groups -- gggrrrr

By the way folks, it was Dusty, not Harry
What's the meaning of this?
Poor Harry, I guess

Hopefully the mission will be over soon, but here's one last essential instalment in the BCP graphics and lyrics fan chart --

The Thousandth and Tenth Day of the Human Totem Pole

The thousandth and tenth day of the human totem pole.
The morning was distemper grey,
Of the thousandth and tenth day of the human totem pole.
The man at the bottom was smiling.
He had just finished his breakfast smiling.
It hadn't rained or manured for over two hours.
The man at the top was starving.
The pole was a horrible looking thing
With all of those eyes and ears
And waving hands for balance.
There was no way to get a copter in close
So everybody was starving together.
The man at the top had long ago given up
But didn't have nerve enough to climb down.
At night the pole would talk to itself and the chatter wasn't too good.
Obviously the pole didn't like itself, it wanted to walk!
It was the summer and it was hot
And balance wouldn't permit skinning to undergarments.
It was an integrated pole, it was taking on an reddish brown cast.
Exercise on the pole was isometric,
Kind of a flex and then balance
Then the highest would roll together,
The ears wiggle, hands balance.
There was a gurgling and googling heard
A tenth of the way up the pole.
Approaching was a small child
With Statue of Liberty doll.

I'm not holding my breath expecting the original Bat Chain Puller to ever be released.
(I've totally given up on the "Roxy" DVD) Anyways, I downloaded the original BCP album,
It's a bit hissy, but it will do. If by some miracle Gail is telling the truth about this album,
I will gladly buy it. But, I've lost count on the years that have gone by, and still no BCP,
Roxy DVD, etc. I hope I'm wrong this time. And the original 1976 BCP sees the light of day.
One of the reasons I believe this won't be released, is that it's been bootlegged to death.
There are so many copies (mostly inferior) of this out there. I was lucky to download a
farily clean copy with little tape hiss. My dream is to have this album with no hiss at all,
Don's paintings reproduced in the CD booklet and extensive liner notes.
"Seam Crooked Sam" and "Odd Jobs" is worth the price the admission. The whole album
is excellent! :-)

yeah, I hope "Feeding the Monkies..." is good stuff, but I personally feel this record should take precedence to ensure it's out by year's end.

also, you buying this?: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Oxford-UK-June- ... _rhf_p_t_1

It looks pretty, and I know they did some great shows - I heard some tapes over at the old KUR. French is a real card - he even sings the parts when he must. I look forward to his guitar playing - and drumming - on BCP. Rarely buy CDs by tribute bands, though - we'll see...

Meditating on this. I figure the ZFT have 'til January 15th (Don's 70th) to pre-sale it. After that, if it no happen, I will never dwell upon it again. But I remain positive.

OM... That's my initials in the real world... yes, it's true 8)

Do yourself a favour and listen to the 1975 El Paso show on some half decent loudspeakers - it's great!
