As advised by an esteemed forum member to do just this (violins are 'GOA'), what bit would you remove from a FZ tune, assuming you have the software / skills etc.
I'd also relocate the fluff between the two parts of oh no BTW...

Hard to say as it is all what Frank intended. I'm not in to remixing or editing other artists music but for the hell of it I'd say make Ya Hozna a bit shorter, shorten For Calvin by about a minute and remove the shitty bass and drums from some of the remixes.

I want to give YAWYI a thorough editing, see if I can get it to sound less cramped.

When I was a teenager I edited a whole 80 minute Mothers/Zappa compilation. I spliced and diced. One of the cooler parts was I had the Suzy Creamcheese line from Uncle Meat "I can remember Elmer telling me that you really had a lot of talent, but he didn't see how anyone could ever make it that insisted on saying FUCK on stage" segue right into the ending of Billy The Mountain - "a mountain is something you don't want to fuck with" into Lonesome Cowboy Burt which, right after JCB says "you hot little bitch" went immediately into the Sneaky Pete solo from One Shot Deal. Only the solo. That segued into a short bit from Lumpy Gravy, and on and on. I still have it, actually.

Yep it is. Look on the liner notes and credits on YAWYI. He also was a special guest on a show in 1980 and sang Lonesome Cowboy Burt live. Im sure its filmed and on youtube.

It doesn't say he sings on the track in the liner notes. I was never sure who it was, but I assumed it was 'white' guy singing like a redneck. It must be him doing the 'goddam little communist' voice over too.

He is mentioned as "Guest Vocalist" though (and true, he surely is the "'goddam little communist' voice on Drafted Again). He sang Harder than Your Husband (not Lonesome Cowboy Burt) live with Zappa in Albuquerque on October 12, 1980:

I'd edit out (totally eliminate) Luigi and the Wise Guys from the cd version of The Man From Utopia and return it (TMFU) to the original album sequence .

For FZ, I'm thinkin I've only edited albums, e.g. Uncle Meat w/o the extras or CPIII w/o vox trax

For Non-FZ, mostly I'll edit 3 types:
1. Songs that are the "secret track" that gets put 5 minutes after the last song - Get rid of the dead space - e.g. Jarvis Cocker "Cunts Are Still Running the World"
2. Songs that have too much crowd noise at the end - Kill the crowd - e.g. Keith Jarrett - I could edit more than I have time to do. Gads, they pack on the clapping for his albums.
3. Songs that have dissonant end sections contrary to the rest of the piece. - e.g. Eugene Chadbourne - It kinda feels bad to do, but Chadbourne has many songs that I like to have on shuffle, but I can't be at work having jarring distorted atonal chord clusters with stumbling rhythms kicking in. Luckily, he often has them easy enough to separate. (Yes FZ gets played in the workplace! :) )

Agree on the FZ part, have no opinion on the others...

I can't think of any tracks that would benefit from my pruning except to attempt a "Guitar"-like album which I did pretty successfully with "Buffalo". I also once edited down Blessed Relief to fit on the end of a mix tape..somehow I managed a seemless edit on a dual cassette deck...would have worked nice as a 45.
As for albums, Stage #6 could be edited down to one short CD as I get very little joy out of most of the tracks as presented. the second half of Thing-Fish is pretty hard going too. Playground Psychotics could get a serious pruning as well.

I think it would be fun to listen to alternate versions of his albums with just the drums & percussion.

I did that - took out the dialogue, left just the music. The music only version got repeated listens - haven't seen that cdr in a long time, I will need to have another go at it

I've done this as well. I kept a few of the vox trax from CPIII, but edited out the majority of them.
