I am going with at least one younger friend who is into FZ, maybe two young guys.

Glad you are going JayP. Maybe this sounds juvenile, but I was hoping to meet some of you all. I think we could work out something or some place to gather in Baltimore either on Saturday before the event or at what they call the after party. This is an important event in my mind. Rather than just hope that ZPZ keeps Frank's memory alive, this could be the start of some annual event, or educational opportunity to understand his work.

That would be good. I know FZ did not believe in ceremony, but I think that his ability should be recognized.

I will know by the responses or lack thereof whether anyone else is interested. But I will be there, it will be great.

My son and I are planning to make it. I have a sister in N.J. who lives 3 1/2 hours away and I just called her to see if we could spend Saturday night there. Surprise, she wants to go too!
When I first heard of the statue being gifted to Baltimore, I wanted to go.
Thanks Zappa family for giving me some "culture" in my life!

Check this out - the Pratt Library site says it will cost $100 to get a VIP pass and $250 for a special meet-and-greet - jeez, this should be a free event to spread Frank's legacy.....

Well, it's a good cause - and this is Amerika. It didn't happen in Lithuania in Dec of 1995, I know I was there.

I saw that too. I'm assuming it is free unless you want the VIP treatment.

My one person protest of the bust being not too representative of Frank is falling on deaf ears and probably is not going to make a difference.

IMO: Just keep it simple.

I don't care that much. Meh, it's just a statue.

That one's even worse. (IMO).

Why am I so obsessed with statues? I vow to not care anymore!

I don't know Cal...it is funny, I've been to see the statue in Germany many times and have seen dozens of people visit it...no one ever says anything bad about it. The hotel I stayed at two years in a row was right across the street from it and I've watched so many people decorating with flowers and getting their photos taken in front of it (including myself).

I think it is one of those things that you have to see in person to completely appreciate. But you know what they say, "opinions are like assholes, everyone's got one".

I vowed not to care anymore. Sigh. I just don't think that it's representative of him as a composer.

Hear ya, Calvin. Hideous, indeed. Looks like the crap Enver Hoxha
would have died for. Awful stuff –- Remember?: ‘Communism doesn’t work”. And now? – Socialist Realist triteness at its worst!
(badly executed, as well (sorry, couldn’t resist ) ...And this is the sort of material someone in the United States, the land of Alexander Calder,
would cherish ?? Boooh --

Gawd, it's so ugly - he's looking so fucking determined like he's goin' to blow everyone's lights out in all of the Western Hemisphere within
one tenth of a second --

Doesn't look like the guy made an album which went by the name of 'Does Humor Belong in Music?' --

I don't wanna be a moaner, but really, What's new in Baltimore? Who cares if they put up an ugly bust or even a sculpture of Frank as guitar God? That kind of realism is as dead as art can get in my book, and totally opposite to what Zappa's all about. It would have made much more sense if they'd commisioned Cal Schenkel to make a 3D representation of the Uncle Meat collage, preferably with real skull fragments  That could have put the idea across to the Baltimorians.

Folks:

I just came back from visiting the site of the upcoming dedication, the Enoch Pratt LIbrary on Eastern Ave in Baltimore.

Bad news.

The city ought to be ashamed of where they've chosen to erect FZ's bust. To say this is a bad neighborhood would be like saying the BP disaster was a small leak.

Don't get me wrong, I've lived in some really bad hoods: Camden, NJ and Shaw in DC (look 'em up). The site they've chosen will make you outraged. I am.

If you go, be cautious and careful.

And pack light.
