I'm curious as to why Frank made the switch from Gibson SG to Fender Strat. Is there mention of this in any of his interviews?

It's a good question. However, both guitars were so heavily modified that they were hardly just Gibsons or Strats. They were both some sort of hybrid.

By the way, if you go to the Guitar Player T.V. site, there's some nice videos of Dweezil describing how the SG was modified, as well as playing said guitar.......

I'd say for the whammy bar

Frank's SG on the Dub room special had a whammy bar.

Frank like the Strat cause it was lighter in weight. He did started to use a Les Paul 1980-1982 which he also said was too heavy.

He left the Gibson in his other trousers.

Wasn't there something about the SG being on the thin side and was starting to warp, so he got the Les Paul and liked the way it sounded.
Maybe someone can put me right on this. :?

Guitar Player Magazine: Why the switch from SG to Les Paul?

FZ: Because my SG has been injured a number of times and i had the neck shaved so it would fit my hand a little bit better, but it weakened the neck and there's a crack in the back of the neck and because the neck is so weak, it's hard to keep it in tune 'cause the neck moves around and this Les Paul is like a rock.

I think EFF ZED liked the gibson scale, and an extra fret. So he had his necks for fender style guitars made to Eb.

I was surprised when FZ pronounced his initials as eff zee. Its been eff Zed with me for years

humf!

eff zed is hard staccato sound, and is more correct, and much more manly.

Two nations divided by a common language.

3 nations. Living in Canada, I sit in an EE-Zed chair, buy EE-Zed Off Oven Cleaner, and go to the zoo to see Zeh-bras.

I've decided I like Freddy Fender better than Mel Gibson.
