Maybe someone knows the definitive answer? Did Duke play any dates with Frank's touring band in early 1970? Was he at the 200 Motels Contempo '70 affair in May 1970? (audio evidence sure sounds like it). I know by June he was with the Flo and Eddie band---so what's the answer?

thanks all.

Thanks........I"ve seen those sites but there's conflicting evidence here.
For example, this site below makes reference to Duke and Simmons being part of the "pre-Contempo Mothers lineup" that rehearsed in April/May for the May 15th concert with the L.A. Philharmonic:
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepage ... ew/70w.htm

I know Simmons was already with the band at that point...but was Duke?
As much as I'm loathe to quote Miles, he does say this in his book (p.201):
"Zappa loved his (Duke's) celeste and electric piano playing with the L.A. Philharmonic at the Zubin Mehta concert and asked him to join the band...."
And dang if I don't hear a celeste and electric piano that sounds like Duke at that concert. Esp the part that reprises Duke's piano soloing on the "Duke of Prunes" (Ha!) portion of "Music for Electric Violin and Low-Budget Orchestra."
However, like the sites quoted above, most of what I've seen make reference to Duke first joining in June of '70, and Miles is the first mention I've found of Duke being present at the Mehta concert.
Any other evidence out there? Any eyewitnesses or reports to confirm (or deny) Duke's presence earlier than June?

All---

George Duke just confirmed it in an email to me----he played at the Pauley Pavilion concert with Zappa and Zubin Mehta. Looks like some web sites need to give Mr. Duke his due.

Really? I thought it was Ian Underwood who played the keys all along there. But apparently he really stuck to playing alto sax during the May 1970 gigs. Don Preston appeared with this interim MoI on organ.

This multi-purpose FZ reference source is pretty handy for these types of questions: http://www.webalice.it/oscar.bianco/tcmyc/index.html
