Can someone please tell me where I can find the "Official Album Release List" as per the numbering system that the ZFT use. I've been to places like Wikipedia, but their discography doesn't tally up with numbers on the rear of the most recent CD's.

For example, QuAUDIOPHILIAc is supposed to be #74, but I can't work out how they get to that number.

Your help would be appreciated.

It's #73 at the site, above. It's #74 on the official copy.

The newly released One Shot Deal paper catalogue insert has it as #74.

Well at least Halloween, Corsage, Domage & QuAUDIOPHILIAc are in the right place, although not necessarily in the right order. Looks to me like Domage & QuAUDIOPHILIAc are the wrong way round, but otherwise correct.

Is that the officially recognised order of release list?

According to The Official Frank Zappa Discography, which is included in a limited amount of shipments of the recently released One Shot Deal, they are numbered, as follows:

Halloween #71
Joe's Corsage #72
Joe's Domage #73
QuAUDIOPHILIAc #74

According to the dates in the Official Discography, not all of the albums were released in numerical order.

There could be still debates about the official release dates.

My guess is that the confusion over the numbers has to do with the difference between conception/completion dates and actual release dates. The ZFT may plan a release to happen in a certain way but in the real world things don't usually go exactly according to plan. Their own catalogue numbers seem to coincide with conception/completion dates.

For instance, Lumpy Gravy is number 3 and We're Only In It For The Money is number 4 in line with when FZ actually completed those albums. For reasons I'll skip, the release of Lumpy Gravy was delayed and I think FZ putting "Is this phase one of Lumpy Gravy" on the WOIIFTM cover was a concession to that delay so as not to confuse people.

Another example is that the MOFO releases were delayed but were intended to appear before Trance-Fusion.

Right, I think I have managed to get my head around that. Thank you everyone for your replies.

I now have a further question, and it's a big ask....

Imagine that I had just landed on Earth and I had no Zappa material whatsoever, which release, be it vinyl, tape, CD or otherwise, would be considered the definitive version of each entry in the discography?

For example, I know that there is an issue with the Ryko release I have of the combined WOIIFTM/LG due to remixes etc. but what should I replace it with?

I'm sure there are other albums that have suffered similarly.

Although it was printed on the flyer that release #83 would be Corsaga #4, One Shot Deal isn't part of the corsaga. It was the next planned release at the time, but things change.

depends on how much of a completist you want to be; some are content with the 1 version they have, some prefer their 1st version over any subsequent variation, some gotta own them all, every last fucking insanist variation regardless if the differences are subtle or extreme [there's a 12-step program called zappaholics anonymous, check it out]

Hey, Slime, when did you get your flyer? I got mine with One Shot Deal but it only goes up to release 80 which says "Concert Release" (Buffalo of course). There's no Montanasoon. They must have run out of the latest ones and sent me an old one left lying around.

I have them all in one version or another, I just don't want to be missing out on anything. I'll have a trawl through my collection and see if anything is in need of upgrading.

I presume I don't need to worry what version of Freak Out I have if I get the MOFO deluxe.

it came with the torture dvd, showed up around 3rd week in june; didn't there used to be a link to a .pdf version on the fz pages of zappa.com; 'the basement' maybe ¿
