I know they were light strings. From http://www.angelfire.com/freak2/arfz/equipment.html I got this info: "Now, the strings. Zappa, who played with a really LOW action, used to work with Ernie Ball (.008 or.009) and, later, with Maxima gold strings. In the first years, FZ played with Gibson picks, later with Fender Medium; in the eighties, he used metal picks." Not sure where the information came from or how accurate but I have a feeling he moved to .008s in the eighties (hard to find in the 60s and 70s).

did zappa have small/weak hands or something? or maybe he just wanted to be able to bend up 2 steps.

Yeah, very light. I would stumble over my fingers with that. Quite interesting, as his sound on early recordings does not appear as being from that light strings. Indeed, some of his solos with the semi-acoustic Gibson, appear to be with less "bendable" strings.
